Wife Hannah was listed as 45 years old, also born in Ohio. Children Martha and James, ages 17 and 15, had attended school within the year; and daughter Sarah J., aged 2 years old was also listed.
In the 1870 census, James' real estate was valued at $3000 and his personal estate was valued at $800. Son Jesse R., aged 33 born Ohio was living with James & Hannah, working as a farm laborer. Daughter Sarah was still living at home. There was also a boarder, Lewis BRANDENBURG, aged 16, born Ohio, living with the family.
