Shaky Leaves : Daniel S. Albright (1827-1892)

Daniel S. Albright (1827-1892) is my maternal 4th-great granduncle, the husband of Sarah Beals.  Ancestry.com is currently showing my 8 hints for him in my LeMaster & Allied Families member tree from historical records.

One record was from the database Indiana, Marriage Collection, 1800-1941.

Name:Daniel Allbright
Spouse Name:Sarah Bales
Marriage Date:12 Sep 1850
Marriage County:Howard

This data matches what I have for Daniel and Sarah in my RootsMagic database, though I didn't have a source listed.  The collection at Ancestry references the WPA.  I will need to search in Howard County to obtain an actual copy.

Another database was the U.S., Find A Grave Index, 1600s-current.

Name:Daniel S Albright
Birth Date:15 Feb 1827
Birth Place:Ohio, USA
Death Date:2 Sep 1892
Death Place:Miami County, Indiana, USA
Cemetery:Albright Cemetery
Burial or Cremation Place:Kokomo, Howard County, Indiana, USA
Has Bio?:N
Spouse:Sarah Albright
Father:Rev William Albright
Mother:Elizabeth Albright
URL:http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-...

Following the outside link took me to Daniel's memorial page at FindAGrave, which lists his parents and gives complete birth and death date.  It also confirms his Civil War service.

Another database was U.S., National Homes for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers, 1866-1938.

Ancestry.com. U.S. National Homes for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers, 1866-1938 [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations Inc, 2007.
Original data: Historical Register of National Homes for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers, 1866-1938; (National Archives Microfilm Publication M1749, 282 rolls); Records of the Department of Veterans Affairs, Record Group 15; National Archives, Washington, D.C.

This record shows that in 1891, Daniel was living in Marion, Grant County, Indiana at the home for disabled veterans.

His birthplace was listed as Tennessee, he was 64 years old, 5'10" tall, with a fair complexion and black eyes and grey hair.  His occupation was listed as a mason.  His residence subsequent to discharge was Xenia, Indiana and his nearest relative was Mrs. Sarah Albright of Xenia.  Xenia is the former name of today's Converse, Indiana.

Daniel's rate of pension was $17.00.  He was admitted July 21, 1891 and discharged June 3, 1892 by his own request.  His pension certificate was number 103.803.

Other database records included the 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880 census in Howard County, Indiana which listed Daniel.  These were added to my Family Member Tree after making sure they had been updated in my RootsMagic database.  In each of these, Daniel's birth place was listed as Tennessee.  In 1870 they were living at Fairfield and in 1880 they were in Xenia.

If you are related and/or have additional corrections or information, I'd love to hear from you.

Newman Smith and Martha Lemaster, Shelby County, Ohio, 1861

Received an exciting email this week from a potential cousin on my LeMaster side who wrote:

my 2xggfather's brother Newman Smith wife was Martha J. Lemaster, they married in Shelby county Ohio on August 25, 1861. He was also known as Rev Smith a minister of the Methodist church of Kansas, Oklahoma and Arkansas. I think she is the daughter of Luman Walker Lemasters (1808 - 1888) (also a minister of the Methodist church )and   Nancy Young Lemasters (1812 - 1904).  Can you please confirm this?

It is always exciting to make possible new connections, and I don't usually find them on my surname that are close.  Luman Walker Lemasters and Nancy Young Lemasters are my paternal 3rd great grandparents.  As they were married in Shelby County, Ohio and lived there until the mid-1850s, any other Lemaster in that vicinity has a good chance of being a close relative.

I was not aware of the marriage record of Newman Smith and Martha J. Lemaster in Shelby County, Ohio.  A quick search of Familysearch located the record:

"Ohio, County Marriages, 1789-1997," index and images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XDPP-FQJ : accessed 06 Nov 2014), Newman H Smith and Martha Lamaster, 25 Aug 1861; citing Shelby, Ohio, United States, reference volume 4 page 184; county courthouses, Ohio; FHL microfilm 562859.

I quickly wrote him back and let him know that I did not think that the connection came through Luman Walker Lemasters and Nancy Young, as their daughter Martha was born too late to be the one who married in 1861.  Their Martha J. was born circa 1851 and married in 1872 in Jay County, Indiana to William Loofborrow.

That Newman was a Methodist minister is interesting, as that was the occupation of Luman Walker Lemasters and other members of the extended family.  They were closely associated with the Methodist church.

However, where I think there might be a connection is through Luman's brother, Lemuel Quin Lemasters (1811/2-1843) and Hannah Albright.  Lemuel died young, but he did have one son and three daughters.  One of those daughters was named Martha, who was born circa 1837.  She would be the right age to be the one who married Newman Smith in 1861.

I checked out Newman Smith's FindAGrave memorial and noticed that he had a son named Perry Quin Smith and that Perry named his son Lemuel.  Circumstantial evidence, I know, but the use of the uncommon names may indicate a connection.

I need to dig into the records in Shelby County, Ohio and see what I can find on Lemuel's family after his early death.  I believe at one time I requested his estate records, but I haven't sourced them into my database.

I'm waiting with fingers crossed to see if this potential cousin responds with more information and whether or not I'll be able to add more cousins to the tree.  I wonder if he has done any DNA testing?

Last Sunday, I managed to get away to the Allen County Public Library in Ft. Wayne, Indiana to do some research.  The library has hours from noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday, and with parking in the garage only $ 1.00 per hour, I need to take advantage of the opportunity when I can.

The library now has a photocopy card that it uses as cash, you can reload the card with any denomination.  No more lugging around quarters, nickels and dimes.
