Surname Saturday : Bonnell

The BONNELL surname is in my paternal line.  The origins are likely English, and this particular line was of the Quaker faith.

Stories and history :

Ahnentafel # 573 : Hannah Bonnell (   -1754).  Hannah's birth date is not known.  She married Jeremiah Haines (1713-1774) on September 6, 1736 in Burlington County, New Jersey. Jeremiah was born March 25, 1713 in Burlington County, New Jersey.  They raised 7 children in Burlington County.  Jeremiah died October 30, 1774 in Burlington County, New Jersey.  Hannah died August 15, 1754 in Burlington County, New Jersey.

Ahnentafel # 1146 : Robert Bonnell (1675-   ).  Robert was born in 1675.  He married Frances Goodwin (   -1750) on October 16, 1707 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania. Frances' birth date is unknown. They had at least 3 children.  Frances died 1750 in Burlington County, New Jersey.

1707 - Robert BONNELL married Frances GOODWIN in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania.  They were my 8x-great grandparents.

1723 - Matthew OSBORNE married Isabel DODSON.  Matthew was the son of Matthew OSBORNE and Mary ________.  They were my 8x-great grandparents.

1743 - Nathaniel CHEW married Anne GIBBONS.  Nathaniel was the son of Nathaniel CHEW and Mary CLARK.

1799 - Eusebius LOGAN born.  Eusebius was the son of John LOGAN and Rachel McPHEETERS.

1808 - Joel MAXON married Hannah FIELDS in Fayette County, Pennsylvania.  Joel was the son of Stephen MAXON and Margaret BRANNON.

1808 - Seth MILLS married Charity THORNBURG.  Seth was the son of Aaron MILLS and Charity MENDENHALL.

1809 - Ezekiel CHEW born in Virginia.  Ezekiel was the son of Joseph CHEW and Elizabeth THOMAS.

1812 - Mary KELSO born in Kentucky.  Mary was the daughter of Charles KELSO and Mary McPHEETERS.

1832 - Jane STOUT married Simeon FURNIER.  Jane was the daughter of Jesse STOUT and Sarah MORRISON.

1840 - Ephraim C. BECKETT born.  Ephraim was the son of Lemuel Daugherty BECKETT and Sarah Springer CHEW.

1849 - Julia Ann MILLS married William M. MACY in Morgan County, Indiana.  Julia was the daughter of Henry MILLS and Hannah WOODWARD.

1869 - Florence Belle PEFLEY born.  Florence was the daughter of Thomas Jefferson PEFLEY and Ruth Anne DUFFEY.

1879 - Mary Angeline FISHER married Robert McCORD.  Mary was the daughter of Lewis W. FISHER and Rebecca MARSHALL.

1886 - Frankie Cleveland KING born in Madison County, Indiana.  Frankie was the daughter of David KING and Litha Ann Trumilis D'Amsel MAY.

1893 - Maud I. CHIVLARE born in Warrick County, Indiana.  Maud was the daughter of Isaac C. CHIVLARE and Florence FOLLOWAY.

1918 - Lisa Irene BOOK died in Clay Township, Dunklin County, Missouri.  Lisa was the daughter of Charles Allen BOOK and Bertie May CUMMINGS.

1723 - Alexander WRIGHT born in Freuchie, Fife, Scotland.  Alexander was the son of Robert WRIGHT and Elizabeth HENDERSON.


1742 - Benjamin ALLEN born.  Benjamin was the son of John ALLEN and Amy COX.


1753 - Hannah GREENE born.  Hannah was the daughter of John Matthew GREENE and Judith MAXSON.


1753 - Anna Marie Dorothea KAMMEIER born.  Anna was the daughter of Heinrich Hermann KAMMMEIER and Anna Catherina KAHRE.


1761 - Sarah BURDICK born in South Kingston, Rhode Island.  Sarah was the daughter of Oliver BURDICK and Lydia ELDERTON.


1773 - Samuel WOOLSTON died.  Samuel was the son of Samuel WOOLSTON and Susanna BUDD.  Samuel was my 6x-great grandfather.


1800 - Sarah BEALS married Jesse HIATT.  Sarah was the daughter of Daniel BEALS and Susanna JACKSON.


1825 - James Wesley WARDLAW born.  James was the son of James WARDLAW and Eleanor IRWIN.


1842 - Howard HAWORTH married Cammalino RIPLEY.  Howard was the son of Absalom HAWORTH and Mary WEST.


1847 - Jacob RINEHART died in Henry County, Indiana.  Jacob was the son of Peter RINEHART and Margaret MINGA. Jacob was Eileen's 4x-great grandfather.


1864 - Rebecca A. SWAFFORD born in Missouri.  Rebecca was the daughter of John B. SWAFFORD and Nancy Rowena MILLARD.


1866 - William P. WEHRLY married Olive Jane SMITH in Jay County, Indiana. William was the son of Johannes WEHRLY and Barbara PETRY.  Olive was the daughter of William P. SMITH and Prudence MAXSON.  They were my 2x-great grandparents.


1875 - Abijah D. MORRISTON born.  Abijah was the son of Alonzo T. MORRISTON and Rebecca A. WAMSLEY.


1879 - Cora B. LEMASTERS born in Indiana.  Cora was the daughter of Jacob LEMASTERS and Sarah Ann HALFHILL.


1881 - Charles Alexander West CHEW married Rebecca F. SHUMAKER in Jay County, Indiana.  Charles was the son of Ezekiel Cooper CHEW and Caroline Bishop WOOLSTON.


1883 - Mary P. LeMASTERS married John PETRY in Jay County, Indiana.  Mary was the daughter of Luman Walker LEMASTERS and Nancy YOUNG.


1886 - W.J. CUMMINGS died in Tennessee.  W.J. was the son of John Jackson CUMMINGS and Mary Jane MATLOCK.


1889 - Martha PIERCE married John M. JOHNSON in Madison County, Indiana.  Martha was the daughter of Edmund G. PIERCE and Catherine GROENENDYKE.


1901 - Orlie DAVIS born.  Orlie was the son of Joseph Newton DAVIS and Almeda DAVIS.


1905 - Ralph Eugene FISHER born in Cicero, Hamilton County, Indiana.  Ralph was the son of Francis Franklin FISHER and Maud LAMBERTSON.


1907 - Thomas Clinton SWAFFORD born in Bledsoe County, Tennessee.  Thomas was the son of James Aaron SWAFFORD and Nancy Alice SHERRIL.


1952 - Katherine MIGUET died.  Katherine was the daughter of Judson JARRETT and Jane WOODS.  Katherine was Corinne's 3x-great grandmother.


1970 - Pearl May LAMBERTSON died in Elwood, Madison County, Indiana.  Pearl was the daughter of Nathan Thomas BEALS and Elizabeth Caroline POE.  Pearl was my 2x-great grandmother.

My maternal 5th-great granduncle, Joseph WRIGHT, married on this date in 1818 in Brown County, Ohio to Clarissa GARDNER.  Clarissa's parentage is unknown.  Joseph was the son of John and Sarah (FLEMING) WRIGHT, and the younger brother of my George WRIGHT.  Joseph was born January 26, 1798 in Kentucky.  Clarissa was born circa 1800 in New York.  They had at least one child.  Clarissa died January 29, 1882 in Brown County, Ohio.  Joseph died December 13, 1856 in Brown County, Ohio.


My maternal 6th-great grandparents, Nicholas KIMMER and Sarah FAYLER, were married on this date in 1784 in Berks County, Pennsylvania.  Nicholas was born circa 1763.  Sarah's date of birth and death are unknown.  Nicholas served in the Revolutionary War.  They had 11 children.  Nicholas died October 19, 1841 in Fayette County, Indiana.


My maternal 2nd-great grandaunt, Daisy L. WRIGHT, married on this date in 1890 in Madison County, Indiana to Thomas A. FOX, son of Phillip and Mary Susanna Katherine Jane (RECTOR) FOX.  Daisy was the daughter of Joseph W. and Rebecca (HEATON) WRIGHT, and the younger sister of my John W. WRIGHT.  Daisy was born June 1873 in Madison County, Indiana.  Thomas was born September 1869 in Madison County, Indiana.  They had 4 children and lived in Madison County.  Thomas died February 1, 1926 in Madison County, Indiana.  Daisy was still living after the 1930 census.


My maternal 5th-great granduncle, William J. JACOBS, married on this date in 1821 in Brown County, Ohio to Zoa WILKS.  Zoa's parentage and dates of birth and death are unknown.  William was the son of William and Sibell (LITTEL) JACOBS, and the younger brother of my James Thomas JACOBS.  William died June 23, 1879 in Brown County, Ohio.  Nothing further is known at this time.


My paternal 4th-great grandaunt, Barbara SHERRICK, was born on this date in 1785 in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.  Barbara was the daughter of David and Barbara (ERB) SHIRK, and the younger sister of my David SHERRICK.  Barbara died July 13, 1851 in Coles County, Illinois.  Nothing further is known at this time.


My paternal 6th-great grandaunt, Rebecca HAINES, was born on this date in 1744 in Burlington County, New Jersey.  Rebecca was the daughter of Jeremiah and Hannah (BONNELL) HAINES, and the younger sister of my Robert HAINES.  Rebecca married June 7, 1775 in Burlington County, New Jersey to John WHITE, son of Josiah and Rebecca (FOSTER) WHITE.  John was born September 9, 1747.  They had 6 children.  John died August 21, 1785.  Rebecca died March 22, 1826 in Mauch Chunk, Carbon County, Pennsylvania.

My paternal granduncle, Charles L. HALEY, was born on this date in 1902 in Jay County, Indiana.  Charles was the son of Eli Weldon and Cora Belle (METZNER) HALEY, and the older brother of my Ruth Pauline HALEY.  Charles died February 27, 1903 in Jay County, Indiana and is buried in the Mt. Zion Cemetery, Jay County, Indiana.


My paternal 6th-great granduncle, Jeremiah HAINES, was born on this date in 175 1 in Burlington County, New Jersey.  Jeremiah was the son of Jeremiah and Hannah (BONNELL) HAINES, and the younger brother of my Robert HAINES.  Jeremiah married April 26, 1775 in Burlington County, New Jersey to Mary HANN. Mary's parentage and dates of birth and death are unknown.  Jeremiah died June 15, 1776.  Nothing further is known at this time.


My maternal 5th-great grandaunt, Lucinda PIERCE, was born on this date in 1769.  Lucinda was the daughter of Seth and Bethiah (FIELD) PIERCE, and the older sister of my Gordon PIERCE.  Lucinda married on November 27, 1788 to Thomas WELCH.  Thomas was born February 17, 1757.  They had 11 children.  Thomas died March 20, 1832.  Lucinda died January 25, 1854 in Enfield, Connecticut.

My maternal 4th-great granduncle, James GROENENDYKE, was married on this date in 1834 in Fayette County, Indiana to Charity DURMAN.  James was the son of James and Joannah (ANTONIDES) GROENENDYKE, and the older brother of my Elias GROENENDYKE.  Charity's parentage is unknown.  James was born August 12, 1812 in New Jersey.  Charity was born February 17, 1815.  They raised 7 children and lived in Mt. Pleasant Township, Delaware County, Indiana.  Charity died April 12, 1878.  James died October 3, 1878 in Delaware County, Indiana.  Both are buried in the Sharp Cemetery, Mt. Pleasant Township, Delaware County, Indiana.

My paternal 7th-great grandparents, Jeremiah HAINES and Hannah BONNELL, were married on this date in 1736 in Burlington County, New Jersey.  Jeremiah was the son of William and Sarah (PAINE) HAINES.  Hannah was the daughter of Robert and Frances (GOODWIN) BONNELL. Jeremiah was born March 25, 1713 in Burlington County, New Jersey.  Hannah's birthdate is unknown.  They raised 7 children.  Hannah died August 15, 1774 in Burlington County, New Jersey.  Jeremiah died October 30, 1774 in Burlington County, New Jersey.

My paternal 6th-great grandaunt, Sarah HAINES, was born on this date in 1737 in Burlington County, New Jersey.  Sarah was the daughter of Jeremiah and Hannah (BONNELL) HAINES, and the older sister of my Robert HAINES.  Sarah married in 1761 in Burlington County, New Jersey to Isaac HILLIER, son of Edward and Sarah (HAINES) HILLIER.  Isaac was born November 10, 1734.  They had 5 children.  Isaac died April 23, 1805.  Sarah died December 5, 1800 in Burlington County, New Jersey.

My maternal 3rd-great grandaunt, Elizabeth LAMBERTSON, was born on this date in 1823 in Sussex County, New Jersey.  Elizabeth was the daughter of John and Sarah A. (WILLSON) LAMBERTSON, and the older sister of my Carey W. LAMBERTSON.  Elizabeth married October 15, 1839 in Butler County, Ohio to Carey Kinkead GILLILAND, son of Adam Baird and Nancy (KINKEAD) GILLILAND.  Carey was born circa 1816 in Red Oak, Brown County, Ohio.  They had 6 children.  Carey died sometime after the 1870 census.  Elizabeth died October 11, 1860 in Ohio.

My paternal 7th-great grandfather, Francis WORCESTER, was born on this date in 1698 in Bradford, Essex County, Massachusetts.  Francis was the son of Francis and Mary (CHENEY) WORCESTER.  Francis married April 18, 1720 to Abigail CARLTON.  I do not have dates of birth or death, nor parentage for Abigail.  They had at least 1 son.  Nothing further is known at this time.

Robert was the son of Jeremiah & Hannah (BONNELL) HAINES.  Rachel was the daughter of Francis and Rachel (LIPPINCOTT) VENICOMB. Robert was born December 17, 1741 in Burlington County, New Jersey.  Rachel was born circa 1742.  They had 10 children.  Rachel died March 30, 1817 in Burlington County, New Jersey.  Robert died June 21, 1821 in Burlington County, New Jersey.

My paternal great-granduncle, John William WEHRLY, was born on this date in 1870 in Madison Township, Jay County, Indiana.  John was the son of William P. and Olive Jane (SMITH) WEHRLY, and the younger brother of my Barbara Isabel WEHRLY.  John married August 15, 1891 to Esther L. WHITE, daughter of Thomas and Barbara (HUTCHENS) WHITE. Esther was born May 6, 1869 in Salamonia, Jay County, Indiana. They had 2 children.  Esther died July 19, 1958 in Portland, Jay County, Indiana.  John died January 24, 1954 in Salamonia, Jay County, Indiana.

My maternal 4th-great granduncle, Daniel BEALS, married on this date in 1843 in Hamilton County, Indiana to Abigail COOK.  Daniel was the son of Nathan C. and Elizabeth (CHEW) BEALS, and the older brother of my John T. BEALS.  Daniel was born 1st month, 6th day, 1822 in Clinton County, Ohio.  Abigail was born circa 1822, the daughter of Abraham and Hannah (________) COOK.  They had 1 daughter.  Abigail died in 1845 in Howard County, Indiana and is buried in the Albright Cemetery.  Daniel remarried in 1848 to Phebe DAVIS.  Daniel served in Company A, 101st Indiana Infantry in the Civil War.  He died October 30, 1863 in Louisville, Kentucky.

My paternal 6th-great granduncle, Jeremiah HAINES, married on this date in 1775 in Burlington County, New Jersey to Mary HANN.  Jeremiah was the son of Jeremiah and Hannah (BONNELL) HAINES, and the younger brother of my Robert HAINES.  Jeremiah was born September 14, 1751 in Burlington County, New Jersey.  I do not have the dates of birth or death, nor parentage for Mary.  Jeremiah died June 15, 1776.  Nothing further is known at this time.

My maternal 5th-great granduncle, Robert NESBIT, married on this date in 1791 in Bourbon County, Kentucky to Anne McCLENNICHAN.  Robert was the son of Samuel and Mary (BERRY) NESBIT, and the older brother of my Elizabeth NESBIT.  Anne was the daughter of John McCLENNICHAN.  Robert was born circa 1773 in Virginia.  I do not have dates of birth or death for Anne.  Robert died in 1852 in Missouri.  Nothing further is known at this time.

My paternal great-grandaunt, Mary Elsie LeMASTERS, was born on this date in 1827 in Rose Hill, Darke County, Ohio.  Mary was the daughter of Luman Walker and Mary Keziah (CHEW) LeMASTERS Jr., and the younger sister of my Luman Cooper LeMASTERS.  Mary married September 15, 1894 to Matthias J. ATKINSON.  Matthias was born November 23, 1863.  They had 1 foster child.  Matthias died August 24, 1923.  Mary died June 5, 1942.  Both are buried in the Salamonia Cemetery, Jay County, Indiana.

My paternal 3rd-great grandaunt, Phebe Ann LEMASTERS, was born on this date in 1818 in Champaign County, Ohio.  Phebe was the daughter of Jacob and Hannah (________) LEMASTERS, and the younger sister of my Luman Walker LEMASTERS Sr.  Hannah married November 1835 in Shelby County, Ohio to Jesse REID.  Jesse was born in 1812 in Ohio.  They had at least 1 daughter.  Phebe died May 5, 1849 in Salem Township, Shelby County, Ohio.  Nothing further is known at this time.

My paternal 7th-great grandfather, Samuel JEWETT, was born on this date in 1694 in Bradford, Essex County, Massachusetts.  Samuel was the son of Francis and Sarah (HARDY) JEWETT.  Samuel married October 23, 1718 in Bradford, Essex County, Massachusetts to Ruth HARDY, daughter of Jacob and Lydia (EATON) HARDY.  Ruth was born June 15, 1699 in Bradford, Essex County, Massachusetts.  They had at least 1 son.  Ruth died circa 1737.  Nothing further is known at this time.

My maternal great-grandaunt, Una Maude LeMASTERS, was born on this date in 1884 in Jay County, Indiana.  Maude was the daughter of Luman Walker and Mary Keziah (CHEW) LEMASTERS, and the younger sister of my Luman Cooper LeMASTERS.  Maude married December 22, 1907 in Jay County, Indiana to Senator Winfield PHILLIPS, son of Winfield S. and Mary Jane (BATES) PHILLIPS.  Senator was born December 22, 1883 in Kansas City, Kansas.  They had 2 children, and lived in David City, Nebraska.  Senator died December 1977 in David City, Nebraska.  Maude died September 13, 1968 in David City, Nebraska.

They had 6 children.  John died November 11, 1790.  Frances died August 22, 1822 in Burlington County, New Jersey.

WRIGHT.  Clarrissa was married on September 25, 1878 in Brown County, Ohio to William Henry BALLEIN.  William was born January 1847 in Ohio.  They had at least 2 children.  Clarrissa died September 27, 1884 in Brown County, Ohio.  William died after the 1900 census, when he was living in Brown County, Ohio.

My paternal 6th-great granduncle, William HAINES, was born on this date in 1739 in Burlington County, New Jersey.  William was the son of Jeremiah and Hannah (BONNELL) HAINES, and the older brother of my Robert HAINES.  William married Mary EASTLACK.  I do not have dates of birth or death for Mary.  They had at least 1 child.  Nothing further is known at this time.

My maternal 4th-great granduncle, Preston WARDLAW, married on this date in 1831 in Brown County, Ohio to Nancy WISBY.  Preston was the son of Samuel and Elizabeth (NESBIT) WARDLAW, and the older brother of my Anna WARDLOW.  Preston was born circa 1803 in Ohio.  Nancy was born circa 1811 in Ohio.  They had 3 children and lived in Brown County, Ohio.  Nancy died sometime after the 1860 census.  Preston died September 2, 1875 in Brown County, Ohio.

My maternal 5th-great grandaunt, Maris MILLS, married on this date in 1809 to William LOCKE.  Maris was the daughter of Aaron and Charity (MENDENHALL) MILLS, and the younger sister of my Henry MILLS.  Maris' birth was recorded on 4th month, 7th day in 1784 at Deep River Monthly Meeting, Guilford County, North Carolina.  I do not have dates of birth or death for William.  Maris died in 1858.  Nothing further is known at this time.

My paternal 7th-great grandfather, Jeremiah HAINES, was born on this date in 1713 in Burlington County, New Jersey.  Jeremiah was the son of William and Sarah (PAINE) HAINES.  Jeremiah married September 6, 1736 in Burlington County, New Jersey to Hannah BONNELL, daughter of Robert and Frances (GOODWIN) BONNELL.  I do not know when Hannah was born.  They raised 7 children in Burlington County, New Jersey.  Hannah died August 15, 1754 in Burlington County, New Jersey.  Jeremiah died October 30, 1774 in Burlington County, New Jersey.


My paternal 3rd-great grandmother, Rachel H. GARY, was born on this date in 1816 in Fairfield County, Ohio.  Rachel married January 1, 1835 in Hardin County, Ohio to George J. HALEY.  George was born December 14, 1814 in Basel, Switzerland.  They had 10 children and lived in Fairfield, Morrow, Marion and Erie Counties, Ohio.  George was a minister of the Evangelical Association.  George died February 27, 1888 in Huron Township, Erie County, Ohio.  Rachel died November 25, 1897 in Erie County, Ohio.  Both are buried in the Scotts Cemetery, Huron, Erie County, Ohio.


My maternal 5th-great granduncle, William PUTMAN, was born on this date in 1813.  William was the son of James and Elizabeth (KENDRICK) PUTMAN, and the younger brother of my Mary PUTMAN. William married April 5, 1831 in Monroe County, Indiana to Sarah HEAD.  Sarah died 1864 in Linn County, Missouri. They had 10 children. William married February 28, 1865 to Rachel ______.  Rachel was born circa 1813 and died 1881 in Linn County, Missouri.  William died July 3, 1887 in Linn County, Missouri.

Family Milestones: March 16th

My paternal 4th-great grandaunt, Anne WOOLSTON, was born on this date in 1796 in Burlington County, New Jersey.  Anne was the daughter of Samuel and Cyllania (WOOLSTON) WOOLSTON, and the older sister of my Rachel WOOLSTON.  Anne married September 20, 1817 in Burlington County, New Jersey to Joshua WOOLSTON.  Joshua was born circa 1797 in Burlington County, New Jersey.  They had 5 children.  Joshua died 1800 in Burlington County, New Jersey.  I do not have Anne's date of death.

My maternal 5th-great granduncle, Daniel PIERCE, was born on this date in 1786.  Daniel was the son of Seth and Bethiah (FIELD) PIERCE, and the younger brother of my Gordon PIERCE.  Nothing further is known at this time.

My paternal 6th-great grandaunt, Hannah HAINES, was born on this date in 1749.  Hannah was the daughter of Jeremiah and Hannah (BONNELL) HAINES, and the younger sister of my Robert HAINES.  Nothing further is known at this time.

My paternal 6th-great grandfather, Robert HAINES, was born on this date in 1741 in Burlington County, New Jersey.  Robert was the son of Jeremiah and Hannah (BONNELL) HAINES.  Robert married May 17, 1766 in Burlington County, New Jersey to Rachel VENICOMB, daughter of Francis and Rachel (LIPPINCOTT) VENICOMB.  Rachel was born circa 1742.  They had 10 children.  Rachel died March 30, 1817 in Burlington County, New Jersey.  Robert died June 21, 1821 in Burlington County, New Jersey.

Today's featured relative in my database is my maternal 6th-great grandfather, Robert Haines.

Robert was born December 17, 1741 in Burlington Co., NJ, the son of Jeremiah and Hannah (Bonnell) Haines. Robert married on May 17, 1766 in Burlington Co., NJ to Rachel Venicomb, daughter of Francis and Rachel (Lippincott) Venicomb. Rachel was born ca. 1742 and died March 30, 1817 in Burlington Co., NJ. Robert died June 21, 1821 in Burlington Co., NJ.

They were members of the Society of Friends (Quakers) in the Mount Holly Monthly Meeting. Robert was known as "Rich Bobby", and was reported to the monthly meeting on 1st mo. 5 dy. 1780 for paying a fine in lieu of personal services to carry on the war, and for this action he was disowned on 6th mo. 9 dy. 1780.
