Surname Saturday: Prince

The PRINCE surname is in Eileen's paternal line. The origins of the surname are as yet unknown.

Stories and history:

Ahnentafel # 47: Margaret Emley PRINCE (c1835-     ). Margaret was born circa 1835 in Kentukcy, according to the 1870 census.  She married August 15, 1857 to David C. DUNAWAY. David was born September 1833 in Kentucky, the son of Benjamin Evans and Martha Hogg (MIZE) DUNAWAY.  The family appears in the 1870 census of Graves County, Kentucky, and the 1900 census of Marshall County, Kentucky.  They may be in the 1880 census of Gibson County, Tennessee.  They had at least 2 children.

This is a relatively new line to research, and there is much to discover.  A cursory search of the 1850 census in Kentucky shows one possibility, a Margaret PRINCE born circa 1839 in the household of Wilson PRINCE in Lawrence County, Kentucky.  Wilson aged 25, born in Virginia, could be a brother.

Surname Saturday: Dunaway

The DUNAWAY surname is in Eileen's paternal line.  The origins of the surname are as yet unknown.

Stories and history:

Ahnentafel # 23: Ellen DUNAWAY (c1863-     ). Ellen was born circa 1863 in Kentucky, according to the 1870 census of Graves County.  She married George Washington CARTER sometime before 1879, when daughter Emma was born.  Emma listed her parents names on her marriage license in 1896.  Ellen (DUNAWAY) CARTER may be the Lou Ellen CARTER in the 1880 census of Gibson County, Tennessee.

Ahnentafel # 46: David C. DUNAWAY (1833-    ). David was born September 1833 in Kentucky.  He married August 15, 1857 to Margaret Emley PRINCE.  Margaret was born circa 1835 in Kentucky.  They were enumerated in the 1870 census in Graves County, Kentucky and 1900 in Marshall County, Kentucky, where David was a farmer. They may be in the 1880 census of Gibson County, Tennessee.  They had at least 2 children.

Ahnentafel # 92: Benjamin Evans DUNAWAY (c1802-1858).  Benjamin was born circa 1802 in Clark County, Kentucky.  He married November 22, 1832 in Pittsfield, Pike County, Illinois to Martha Hogg MIZE (1809-1842).  Martha was born October 13, 1809 in Kentucky.  She died 1842 in Illinois.  They had 6 children.  Benjamin married secondly to Mary M. ________ (c1813-   ), and had 2 children. They were living in Pike County, Illinois in 1850.

Ahnentafel # 184: Benjamin DUNAWAY married Sarah EVANS.  Nothing further known.

This is a relatively new line for me to start researching, and there are many holes to fill in.

Surname Saturday: Carter

The CARTER surname is Eileen's paternal line.  At this point I don't know much about this Southern Carter line.

Stories and History:

Ahnentafel # 11: Emma CARTER (c1879-1973).  Emma was born reportedly in 1879 Alabama, 1880 Arkansas or 1886 Kentucky, depending on the census record.  She married Samuel IVEY on February 26, 1896 in Massac County, Illinois.  Samuel was born January 1, 1870 in Paducah, McCracken County, Kentucky. They lived in Graves & Marshall Counties, Kentucky and Lawrence and Poinsett Counties, Arkansas.  She died before July 20, 1973 and is buried in the Woodlawn Cemetery, Poplar Bluff, Missouri.

Ahnentafel # 22: George CARTER.  George was listed on Emma's marriage record as her father.  He married Ellen DUNAWAY.

Samuel Ivey & Emma Carter marriage record

Eileen's cousin Betty BLACK found the record of her great-grandparents marriage, apparently through an Ancestry.com database and sent me an email with the information.

Sam and Emma were married February 26, 1896 in Massac County, Illinois. In the copy of the marriage register that Betty sent to me, Samuel IVY was listed as a farmer, a resident of McCracken County, Kentucky, who was born in Marshall County, Kentucky and was 26 years of age. His father was listed as Geo. IVY and his mother as Rebecca HARROLD. Interestingly, it was Samuel's second marriage, a fact that I didn't previously know.

Emma Carter was an 18 year old resident of McCracken County, Kentucky, born in Mayfield, Ky, the daughter of George CARTER and Ellen DUNAWAY. This was her first marriage.

The ceremony was performed at Metropolis, Massac County, Illinois on February 26, 1896.

Samuel and Emma's daughter, Bessie, was Eileen's grandmother. This information opens up a whole new line to research, the DUNAWAY line, and gives more clues to research the CARTER and IVEY clans.
