Marriage Records of Nina (Haley) Hanlin Zorn (1869-1963), Jay County, Indiana

Working on filling in some gaps in my database by utilizing the "Indiana Marriages, 1811-1959" database at Familysearch.org to see what updates and corrections I could find.

Nina Haley (1869-1963) was the daughter of George Washington and Mary Jane (Sherick) Haley.  Her marriage to Thomas Benton Hanlin on July 11, 1888 in Jay County, Indiana was found in the database.  Prior to locating this record, I did not have the exact date of their wedding, nor the names of his parents, John S. Hanlin and Martha Wilson.

Nina's second marriage, after Thomas' death, was June 15, 1901 in Jay County, Indiana to George Zorn.  A copy of their marriage certificate was also found in the database.

Nina was my paternal great-grandaunt.  An exploratory analysis of the biographical data I have discovered about her is found here.

Exploratory Data Analysis: Rachel Emma Pernina (Haley) Hanlin Zorn (1869- 1963 )

Rachel Emma Pernina (Haley) Hanlin Zorn (1869-1963) was my paternal great-grandaunt.  What follows is an exploratory analysis of the biographical data I have discovered about her.

1. Vital Records

     1.1. Birth Certificate

Nina was born November 21, 1869 in Medina County, Ohio1.  The State of Ohio did not require the keeping of birth records until 1867.  State law required the probate court to record these births from 1867 to 1908, according to the Ohio Historical Society webpage.

          1.1.1. Birth Notice in Newspaper

If Nina's birth was recorded in a newspaper, I have not yet discovered it.  There are editions of the Sandusky Register in existence, and that is one avenue of research in the future.

          1.1.2. Bible Record

I am not aware of any surviving Bible record of the Haley family.  Will continue to reach out to extended family in hopes that one does exist.

          1.1.3. Baptismal Record

The Haley's were members of the Evangelical Association.  I am not aware of any baptismal record for Nina at this time.

          1.1.4. Adoption Record

There is no evidence that Nina was adopted.

     1.2. Marriage License

Nina married Thomas Benton Hanlin on July 11, 1888 in Jay County, Indiana2.

Nina married George Zorn on June 15, 1901 in Jay County, Indiana3.

          1.2.1 Marriage Notice in Newspaper

Will need to search contemporary newspaper accounts to see if mention was made of Nina and Thomas' nuptials and Nina and George's nuptials.

          1.2.2. Anniversary Notice

Nina and George's 25th wedding anniversary would have been June 15, 1926 and their 50th wedding anniversary would have been June 15, 1951.  Will need to search contemporary newspaper accounts to see if there was any mention of anniversary celebrations.

          1.2.3. Divorce Decree

There is no indication that Nina was ever divorced, but a thorough search of the court records in Jay County, Indiana needs to be completed.

     1.3. Death Certificate

Nina died in 19634, according to her tombstone.  I do not yet have a copy of her death certificate.  Will add this to my list of "to-do" items for my next research trip.

          1.3.1. Obituary in Newspaper

Will need to check the local newspapers in Jay County, Indiana for an obituary for Nina, once I have the exact date of death.  Will add this to my list of "to-do" items for my next research trip.

          1.3.2. Funeral Home Records

Once I have a copy of Nina's obituary, I can see if the funeral home was mentioned and then check with them to see if they have any additional records of Nina's funeral.

          1.3.3. Tombstone Photograph

Nina's tombstone in the Mt. Zion Cemetery in Jay County, Indiana4 has been photographed.  The marker lists both of her husbands.  The marker reads "Nina Hanlin Zorn 1869-1963".  Husbands "Benton Hanlin 1867-1900" and "George Zorn 1876-1952" are also listed.

     2.3. Agricultural Census Records

I have not yet investigated these types of records to see what light it might shed on the Haley or Zorn farm.

3. Military Records

     3.1. Draft Registration

Not applicable, as Nina was female.

     3.2. Pension Records

4. Land Records

     4.1. Deed Records

Deed records need to be thoroughly searched in Jay County, Indiana, to see what records might mention Nina and her family.

4.2. Plat map / county map

Jay County, Indiana published a plat map in 1874, 1881, 1887, 1901, 1910 and 1920 that might be relevant in my search for Nina.  I have access to the 1887 and 1901 maps, and need to research them to see what they show.

5. Supplemental Records

Supplemental records to research for Nina include city/county directories, court records and will and probate records.  Will add these to my list of "to-do" items for my next research trip.

In 1916, Nina was residing in Noble Township, Jay County, Indiana12.
