FindAGrave Success : Robert E. Kimble (1841-1918)

Thanks to a FindAGrave contributor, I now have a photograph of the tombstone of my paternal step-2nd great-grandfather, Robert E. Kimble (1841-1918).  Robert is buried in the Spring Hill Cemetery, Fort Recovery, Mercer County, Ohio.

This marker shows Robert and his first wife, Catherine.  Robert married secondly to my widowed 2nd-great grandmother, Mary Jane (Sherrick) Haley on May 8, 1897 in Jay County, Indiana.

This record clears up some confusion as to whether or not his middle initial was 'N.' or 'E.'.  Handwriting and other records made it hard to decipher.

It appears that Robert and Catherine's son, John Wesley Kimble is buried in the same cemetery.

Exploratory Data Analysis: Mary Jane (Sherrick) Haley Kimble (1844-1916)

Mary Jane (Sherrick) Haley Kimble (1844-1916) was my paternal 2nd-great grandmother.  What follows is an exploratory analysis of the biographical data I have discovered about her.

1. Vital Records

     1.1. Birth certificate

Mary was born January 13, 1844 in Ashland County, Ohio1.  There were no birth certificates required at this time, as the State of Ohio did not begin requiring them until 1867.

          1.1.1. Birth notice in newspaper

I have not been able to locate any contemporary news reports of Mary's birth.

          1.1.2. Bible Record

I am not aware of the survival of a Sherrick family Bible.  I will continue to reach out to extended family in hopes that one does exist.

          1.1.3. Baptismal Record

I have not located a baptismal record for Mary.  I believe that the Sherrick family were Mennonite/Anabapist, so there would not be an infant baptism record.

          1.1.4. Adoption Record

There is no indication that Mary was adopted.

     1.2. Marriage license

Mary married George Washington Haley on October 14, 1862 in Ashland County, Ohio1.

Mary married Robert N. Kimble on May 8, 1897 in Jay County, Indiana2.  A copy of their marriage license was the subject of an earlier post.

          1.2.1. Marriage notice in newspaper

I have not searched contemporary newspapers in Ashland County, Ohio to see if the nuptials of George and Mary were mentioned.  Likewise, I have not searched Jay County, Indiana newspapers for mention of Robert and Mary's marriage.  Have added this to my "to do" list on my next research trip.

          1.2.2. Anniversary notice

I need to search newspapers in Jay County, Indiana for mention of George and Mary's anniversaries.  Their 25th would have been October 14, 1887.

          1.2.3. Divorce decree

There is no indication that a divorce ever occurred, and a recent search of court records during the time period did not turn up a divorce record.

     1.3. Death certificate

Mary died January 15, 1916 in Jay County, Indiana3.  I need to obtain a copy of her death certificate from the Jay County Health Department.

          1.3.1. Obituary in newspaper

Mary's obituary appeared in the January 15, 1916 edition of the Portland Commercial-Review.3.  Her married name was mispelled as "Kimball" in the obituary, rather than Kimble.  Mary's obituary was the subject of a previous post.

          1.3.2. Funeral home records

The Jay County library has some funeral home records from the various funeral homes in the area.  Will add this to my "to do" list for my next research trip to the area.

          1.3.3. Tombstone photograph

Mary's tombstone in the Mt. Zion cemetery has been photographed.  I need to make it the subject of a "Tombstone Tuesday" post.

2. Census Records

     2.1. Federal Census Records

          2.1.1. 1910 Federal Census

I have yet to find Mary in the 1910 census.  She should probably be in Noble Township, Jay County, Indiana.  She should be living in Noble Township, Jay County, Indiana, but I've not found her in any index.  Will have to do a line by line search in Noble Township.

          2.1.2. 1900 Federal Census

On June 16, 1900, Mary was enumerated in the Robert Kimble household in Noble Township, Jay County, Indiana4, as Mary J. Kimble, wife, age 56, born January 1844 in Ohio.  She had been married for 3 years.  She was the mother of 7 children, 6 of whom were living.  Both of her parents were born in Pennsylvania.  She could read and write and spoke English.  Living in the household were husband Robert, age 58, born in Ohio, step-son John, age 20, born in Indiana, and Mary's daughter Ora, age 15, born in Indiana.

          2.1.3. 1880 Federal Census

On June 22, 1880, Mary was enumerated in the George W. Haley household in Liberty Township, Seneca County, Ohio5, as Mary J. Haley, wife, age 36, born in Ohio.  Her occupation was listed as keeping house.  Both her parents were born in Pennsylvania.  Living in the household were husband George, age 40; son Andrew F., age 16; son Eli W., age 14; son  David E., age 11; daughter Rachel A.P., age 10; son Charles W., age 7; and daughter Carrie M., age 3.

          2.1.4. 1870 Federal Census

On June 6, 1870, Mary was enumerated in the George Haley household in Harrisville Township, Medina County, Ohio6, as Mary Haley, age 26, born in Ohio.  Her occupation was listed as keeping house.  Living in the household were husband George, age 30; son Andrew F., age 6; son Eli W., age 4; son David age 1; and Emma P., aged 6 months.

          2.1.5. 1860 Federal Census

On August 2, 1860, Mary was enumerated in the David Sharack household in Vermillion Township, Ashland County, Ohio7 as Mary J. Sharack, age 17, born in Ohio.  She had attended school within the year.

          2.1.4. 1850 Federal Census

On September 19, 1850, Mary was enumerated in the David Scherick household in Vermillion Township, Ashland County, Ohio8 as Mary Jane Scherick, age 7, born in Ohio. She had attended school within the year.

     2.2. State Census Records

Many states took their own enumerations, unfortunately, Ohio state census records are not known to exist.
The State of Indiana conducted state census in 1853, 1857, 1871, 1877, 1883, 1889, 1901, 1913, 1919, and 1931.  These however, were merely for the purposes of legislative apportionment.

     2.3. Agriculture Census Records

I have not yet investigated these types of census records to see what information they might shed on the Haley farm.

3. Military Records

     3.1. Draft registration

Not applicable, as Mary was female.

     3.2. Pension records

I am not aware of any military service by either of Mary's husbands.

     3.3. Service records

Not applicable, as Mary was female.

4. Land Records

     4.1. Deed records

Deed records need to be thoroughly searched in a number of counties, including Jay County in Indiana as well as Ashland, Medina, Seneca and Marion counties in Ohio.

4.2. Plat map / county map

Jay County published a plat map in 1874, 1881, 1887 and 1901, 1910 and 1920 that may be relevant to my search for the Haley homestead.

Will also need to add searching for maps of the various Ohio counties where Mary lived to my "to do" list for my next research trip.

5. Supplemental Records.

Supplemental records available to research for Mary include city/county directories, court records and will and probate records.  Searching these items will be on my next "to do" list on my research trip to Jay County and/or the Allen County Library in Ft. Wayne.

1897 Directory : Portland, Indiana

My dad has been "downsizing" a bit here recently and has been giving me family history items and other ephemera that I'm in the process of scanning, extracting and posting to the blog.  Using my new Flip-Pal scanner, I'm posting here some family I've found in the 1897 Directory of Portland, Indiana.  Dad's copy is the 1982 reprint, and it is still available for purchase for $5.00 (a steal!) from the Jay County Historical Society.

As I went through the directory, I scanned pages that contained surnames of interest in my research.

The Arthur E. Graves listed here with wife Carrie is the only one that is known to be family, but I've included the others in case someone else knows them.  Arthur was married to Carrie Mae HALEY, daughter of George W. and Mary Jane (SHERRICK) HALEY.  Carrie was my great-grandaunt.  She and Arthur were married in 1895 in Jay County.

There were several HALEY families listed in the directory, but the only one I know for sure is my family is Ora HALEY, listed as being of school age, living at 289 Robert Huey.  She is the sister of Carrie GRAVES (above), and living in the same household.  There were multiple HALEY families in Portland, and I've yet to sort them all out.

The Mary J. KIMBLE listed here is my paternal 2nd-great grandmother, Mary Jane (SHERRICK) HALEY KIMBLE, who was widowed and remarried in May of 1897 to Robert KIMBLE.  Why Robert is not listed in this directory, I'm not sure.  I do not know if the other KIMBLEs listed are of his family.

Notice that Mary KIMBLE, Ora HALEY and Arthur & Carrie GRAVES were all living together at 289 Robert Huey.  Today, this street does not exist.  According to the street cross reference, Robert Huey was Meridian extended, from Votaw to North Corporate line.  Today this is all part of Meridian street.

I've yet to identify which PETRY family that Stella belongs with; another avenue of research.

The J.W. Wehrly listed here was John William WEHRLY, son of William P. and Olive Jane (SMITH) WEHRLY.  John was my paternal great-granduncle.  Later in the directory, the surname is spelled alternatively as Wherley.

Obituary: Mary Jane (Sherrick) (Haley) Kimble (1844-1916)

Source: The Commercial Review, Portland, Indiana, January 15, 1916, page 1.

MRS. KIMBALL DIED SATURDAY

DEATH OCCURRED AT HER HOME IN NOBLE TOWNSHIP FOLLOWING ILLNESS

PAST 72 YEARS OF AGE

Funeral Will Be Held Tuesday Morning At The Mt. Zion Church

Mrs. Mary Haley Kimball, wife of Robert Kimball, died at her home in Noble township, Saturday morning, after a lingering illness. She was born in Ashland County, Ohio, January 13, 1844, having passed her 72nd birthday anniversary Friday. Her husband and the following children survive her: A.F. Haley, Rosston, Ohio; Eli Haley, Nina, wife of George Zorn, both of Noble township; Carrie, wife of Arthur Graves, of Midland, Mich.; Rev. E.D. Haley, of Celina, Ohio, Oral wife of Frank Bittikoffer, Bradford, Ohio. Her step-children are: Minnie wife of William Wells , of Ft. Recovery, Alberta and Wesley Kimball of Noble township. Three sisters and two brothers also remain.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday morning at 10:30 o'clock at Mt. Zion church, Rev. Kauffman and Rev. Baumgartner officiating. Burial will be made in Mt. Zion cemetery.

Comment: The correct spelling of the surname is KIMBLE, as evidence by her marriage license and other records. Mary Jane SHERRICK was my paternal 2nd-great grandmother. Her first husband, George Washington HALEY, passed away in 1892 and she remarried in 1897 to Robert E. KIMBLE. This obituary gives some new data for me, including places of residence of her children during this time period.

Marriage: Robert E. Kimble to Mary Jane (Sherrick) Haley

.
From my visit to the Jay County Indiana Clerk's office, I was able to obtain this copy of the marriage record of Robert E. KIMBLE to my paternal 2nd-great grandmother, Mary Jane (SHERRICK) HALEY.  Their marriage occurred May 8, 1897 in Jay County.

Robert was born in August 1841 in Ohio, of unknown parentage.  Mary was born January 13, 1844 in Ashland County, Ohio, the daughter of David and Susan (JACOBS) SHERRICK.  Her first husband, George Washington HALEY, had died December 16, 1892.

Interesting notation on the record written in pencil is the phrase "Don't Pub.", which I assume meant not to publish in the local newspaper.

Mary died January 15, 1916 in Jay County and is buried in the Mt. Zion Cemetery.  I do not yet know when and where Robert died.

(Not so) Wordless Wednesday: Haley-Kimble homes

Sometimes you wonder why certain photographs were taken by the family, or better yet, why they were saved. The back of this photograph states "Grandpa & Grandma Haley's house". However, I don't know which Haley this would be - could it be the home of Eli Weldon & Cora Belle (METZNER) HALEY; or the home of his parents, George Washington & Mary Jane (SHERRICK) HALEY. The photograph is undated, but appears to have been taken in the 1960s.

The back of the photo above states "Grandma (Haley) Kimble's home" and is in a different handwriting than the other one. This one is dated October 1960. Obviously, at this time the home had fallen into major disrepair. Grandma (Haley) Kimble was Mary Jane (SHERRICK) (HALEY) KIMBLE, my paternal great-great grandmother. She had remarried to Robert KIMBLE after the death of my great-great grandfather, George Washington HALEY.

Both of these photos were taken in Jay County, Indiana and were part of a collection that my father inherited from his mother, Ruth (HALEY) LeMASTER.

Annual Fall Research Trip

It's hard to believe that it has been a year since my last fall research trip, but this year instead of heading north to the Allen County Library I decided to focus on my paternal lines in Jay County Indiana and do some on site research.

My agenda for the day included plans to visit the Jay County Library, the Health Department and the Clerk's office. If time allowed, I wanted to revisit the Salamonia and Mt. Zion cemeteries.

The main focus of this trip would be the surnames of LEMASTER, HALEY, METZNER and WEHRLY. I hoped to visit the courhouse to collect some marriage certificates that I hadn't collected on previous visits.

One thing that I hadn't planned on was the road construction taking place on highway Indiana 26. Because I had to change my route, I was about 45 minutes later than I expected in arriving at the library.

The Jay County Public Library is a very modern facility. I had never been to this library, and was pleased to find that their Indiana Room had a microfilm reader with a printer.

The library had quite a collection of local directories, county history and funeral home records. There were plenty of local sources to research, but I wanted to stay focused and not get too distracted. What I hoped to gain from the visit to the library were obituaries from the local newspaper. The library has quite a collection going back to the 1880s.

By scouring the microfilms and checking the vertical files, I was able to obtain the following genealogy treasures from the library:
  • The obituary of Luman Walker LEMASTER, my paternal 2nd-great grandfather, from the November 18, 1931 edition of The Commercial Review
  • The obituary of Barbara Isabel LEMASTER, my paternal 2nd-great grandmother, from the February 7, 1930 edition of The Commercial Review
  • The obituary of Mary Jane KIMBLE, my paternal 2nd-great grandmother, from the January 15, 1916 edition of The Commercial Review
  • The obituary of Luman Walker LEMASTER Sr., my paternal 3rd-great grandfather, from the February 27, 1927 edition of The Commercial Review
  • The obituary of William P. WEHRLY, my paternal 2nd-great grandfather, from the January 16, 1909 edition of The Commercial Review
  • The obituary of Cora B. HALEY, my paternal great-grandmother, from the April 29, 1955 edition of The Commercial Review
  • The obituary of Luman Cooper LEMASTER, my paternal great-grandfather, from the February 13, 1933 edition of The Commercial Review
  • The obituary of John Adam METZNER, my paternal 2nd-great grandfather, from the December 5, 1895 edition of The Daily Commercial
  • A biography of Lon J. WEHRLY, a 1st cousin 3 times removed, prepared for the Citizens Historical Association of Indianapolis and located in the vertical file
  • A history of the Mt. Zion Church, where my HALEY relatives were members, prepared by Madonna Miller, located in vertical file.
My next stop was the Jay County Health Department, where I hoped to locate a death certificate for Luman Cooper LEMASTER and his wife, Barbara Isabel (WEHRLY) LEMASTER. I had decided before my trip only to seek these two certificates to reduce expenses.

Arriving at the Health Department, I was told by the gentleman at the desk that the lady who handles death certificates was at the bank and would be back shortly. Engaging in small talk, I mentioned that my brother worked for the Hamilton County Health Department and this gentleman, Dave, knew my brother and thought highly of him.

When the clerk, Peggy, arrived back at the office and began to take the information about the death certificate I wanted, she stated that she had LEMASTERs in her family. After figuring out which LEMASTER I was related to, we discovered that we were second cousins, once removed. She had typed up some genealogy papers for her mother, and promised to send me a copy. I gave her a copy of my work business card, but this would be a good time to have had one just made for genealogical purposes. She was able to find Luman but not his wife in the records. I gave her the date again for Barbara and told her I was sure that she had died in Jay County, and then I looked at the obituary I had just located at the library....she had died at the hospital in another county.

For only $4.00, I received a copy of a 'genealogy record' of Luman's death certificate, which did give me his cause of death, cancer of the bladder. Information in hand and having met a new cousin, I was off to the courthouse.

The Jay County Clerk's office has the marriage records going back to 1836 in the large bound books. On a previous trip to the courthouse, I had made a copy of my grandparents' marriage license, and on this trip I wanted to try to obtain copies of marriage records for as many of the direct ancestry and aunts/uncles as I could. The costs are fairly reasonable, only $1.00 per page.

Before making this trip I had prepared a list of all of the marriages in my database that occurred in Jay County, Indiana. I had highlighted those that were in my direct lineage as the ones I would be willing to spend money on today to document. Thanks to the helpful staff at the clerk's office, I was able to obtain copies of the following marriage records:
  • The marriage of my 2nd-great grandparents, William P. WEHRLY and Olive Jane SMITH, which occurred August 5, 1866 in Jay County. This corrects my database, which had their marriage occurring on August 4.
  • The marriage of my 2nd-great grandparents, John Adam METZNER and Clara MOULTON, which occurred November 13, 1864 in Jay County.
  • The marriage of my great-grandparents, Luman Cooper LeMASTERS and Barbara Isabel WEHRLY, which occurred November 13, 1886 in Jay County. This clarified some confusion I had about the date in my database.
  • The marriage of my great-grandparents, Eli Weldon HALEY and Cora Belle METZNER, which occurred July 21, 1888 in Jay County, Indiana.
  • The marriage of my 2nd-great grandmother, Mary Jane (SHERRICK) HALEY, widow, to her second husband Robert E. KIMBLE on May 8, 1897 in Jay County, Indiana.
  • The marriage of my grandaunt, Mary Annettie HALEY to Galen H. MILLER, on August 23, 1917 in Jay County, Indiana.
  • The marriage of my uncle, Paul W. LEMASTER to Betty E. LANNING in 1952.
  • The marriage of my aunt, Ruth A. LEMASTER to Robert A. CHANEY in 1973.
After leaving the clerk's office, I decided to visit the Jay County Historical Society Museum located on Main Street. My parents had recently been to this museum, and told me that they had quite a collection. This was an understatement. The museum is well organized, and contains not only genealogical information, but local history as well. I will have to schedule a trip just to pursue all of the collections. Wandering around, I did locate a photograph of Luman Walker LeMASTERS along with other Civil War veterans in the Civil War room. I joined the society, and asked if they could scan me a copy of this photograph. I also located my grandfather's high school graduation picture (which I had previously seen) as well as a photograph of Dr. W.A. CHEW, a relative of Salamonia, Indiana.

My grandfather, Ord W. LEMASTER, Madison Twp. High School - 1922

The family of W.A. CHEW, physician of Salamonia, Indiana

My final stops of the day would be to revisit the cemeteries at Salamonia and Mt. Zion. My grandfather LEMASTER's relatives are all buried at Salamonia, and my grandmother HALEY's are buried at Mt. Zion. These cemeteries are within a couple miles of each other. The weather was absolutely beautiful, and I snapped a few photographs of tombstones that I had missed on previous visits. Will add these later to FindAGrave.com website.

Overall, I was very pleased with the amount of ground I had covered on these families. The key this trip was staying focused on just a few families and not being sidetracked down the rabbit holes of other lines. The courthouse visit and the health department visits were the most critical because they are not available on the weekends. I can return to the library and the historical society at other times and uncover more treasures.

I have a wonderful wife who is understanding of the fact that genealogy is my 'thing', and that I love to take a day off around my birthday for the annual genealogy pilgrimage.

Robert E. Kimble Family - Jay Co., IN

Today I sourced the census entry for the Robert E. Kimble family in the 1900 census of Noble, Twp., Jay Co., IN. Robert married my widowed 2nd-great grandmother, Mary Jane (Sherrick) Haley on May 8, 1897 in Jay Co., IN.

The census record clearly showed Robert's middle initial as 'E', but I've seen it listed as 'N' as well on the marriage record. His son John W. Kimble was also living with them in the 1900 census. Robert's occupation was that of a farmer, his father was born in New York and his mother was born in Ohio.
