On This Day : July 29

1627 - Thomas CLARKE died in Westhorpe, Suffolk, England.  Thomas was the son of John CLARKE and Katherine COOKE.  Thomas was my 10x-great grandfather.


1724 - Jane CHENEY died.  Jane was my 10x-great grandmother.


1720 - Joseph CRANDALL married Elizabeth CHURCH.  Joseph was the son of Samuel CRANDALL and Sarah COLBY.


1768 - Catherine Elizabeth KINT born in Germany.  Catherine was my 5x-great grandmother.


1772 - Thomas PIERSON died in East Caln, Chester County, Pennsylvania.  Thomas was the son of Thomas PIERSON and Susanna ________.  Thomas was my 9x-great grandfather.


1787 - Jesse HUNT born in Guilford County, North Carolina. Jesse was the son of Isaiah HUNT and Elizabeth FLOYD.


1802 - Elizabeth CHEW born in Clinton County, Ohio.  Elizabeth was the daughter of Andrew CHEW and Anna Marie BARTHUS.  Elizabeth was my 5x-great grandmother.


1810 - Josephus GRIMES born.  Josephus was the son of Benjamin GRIMES and Catherine HAYNES.


1820 - Hanna Maria WOOLSTON born.  Hannah was the daughter of Abel B. WOOLSTON and Rachel WOOLSTON.


1822 - Mary HECK married Joseph TAYLOR.  Mary was the daughter of Jacob HECK and Elizabeth ________.


1834 - Nancy Ann LEMASTERS born in Shelby County, Ohio.  Nancy was the daughter of Luman Walker LEMASTERS and Nancy YOUNG.


1847 - Selina HAWORTH married Andrew Jackson BRUNER.  Selina was the daughter of Nathaniel HAWORTH and Anna OLIPHANT.


1871 - Martha Jane SWAFFORD born in Bledsoe County, Tennessee.  Martha was the daughter of Aaron SWAFFORD and Eliza Jane TAYLOR.


1877 - Albert P. COFFELT born in Cole County, Missouri.  Albert was the son of Daniel COFFELT and Rebecca A. SWAFFORD.


1896 - Mabel M. CUNNINGHAM died.  Mabel was the daughter of John William CUNNINGHAM and Leona A. DRAKE.


1920 - Horrace Frederick CHEW died.  Horrace was the son of Ezekiel Cooper CHEW and Minnie I. SAFFORD.


1937 - Andrew Frank HALEY died in Oak Park, Cook County, Illinois.  Andrew was the son of George Washington HALEY and Mary Jane SHERRICK.


1981 - Charles E. WOOD died in Putnam County, Ohio.  Charles was the son of Walter W. WOOD and Ella E. SYFERT.


1986 - Ida May HARRISON died.  Ida was the daughter of Paul TILLEY and Dora Ann CUMMINGS.


2000 - Gilbert D. WILDT died in Evansville, Vanderburgh County, Indiana.  Gilbert was the son of Arthur WILDT and Anna Magdalena DAMM.

Surname Saturday: YOUNG

The YOUNG family is my paternal line. The origins of this surname are Germanic, so the original spelling was more likely JUNG.


Stories and History:


Ahnentafel # 33: Nancy Young (1812-1904). Nancy was born June 2, 1812 in Pickaway County, Ohio. She married January 19, 1832 in Shelby County, Ohio to Rev. Luman Walker Lemasters Sr. (1808-1888). Luman was born March 11, 1808 in Mason County, Virginia. Luman was an Methodist Episcopal minister and farmer. They moved from Shelby County, Ohio to Jay County, Indiana in 1854, settling in Madison Township.  They raised 11 children. Luman died April 15, 1888 in Jay County, Indiana.  Nancy died August 26, 1904 in Salamonia, Jay County, Indiana.  Both are buried in the Salamonia Cemetery, Jay County, Indiana.


Ahnentafel # 66: Phillip Young (1787-1850). Phillip was born October 11, 1787 in Berkeley County, Virginia.  He married circa 1806 to Nancy Ann McLane (c1790-1825). Nancy was born circa 1790 in Martinsburg, Berkeley County, Virginia. Nancy died May 1825, probably in Pickaway County, Ohio.  Phillip married secondly July 30, 1826 in Pickaway County, Ohio to Keziah Curtis (1808-1891). Keziah was born April 11, 1808 in Pickaway County, Ohio.  Phillip was a farmer and War of 1812 veteran.  Phillip and Nancy had 11 children, and Phillip and Keziah had 10 children. Keziah died February 16, 1891 in Shelby County, Ohio.  Phillip died May 29, 1850 in Shelby County, Ohio.  Both are buried in the Wesley Chapel Cemetery, Shelby County, Ohio.


Ahnentafel # 122: Charles Young (1757-1848).  Charles was born in April 1757 in Germany, near the border with Holland.  He served in the Revolutionary War in General Sullivan's division, and is recognized as a D.A.R. patriot.  He married before 1787, probably Berkeley County, Virginia to Catherine Elizabeth Kint (1768-1841).  Catherine was born July 29, 1768 in Germany.  Charles and Elizabeth had 10 children.  Sometime after 1812, Charles left his wife and fathered a daughter by a housekeeper.  Charles died in 1848 in Berkeley County, Virginia.  After the war of 1812, Catherine and several of her children moved to Shelby County, Ohio.  Catherine died April 17, 1841 in Auglaize County, Ohio.  She is buried in the Presser Cemetery, St. John's, Ohio.

Family Milestones: April 15th

My maternal 2nd-great grandaunt, Lola May LAMBERTSON, married on this date in 1905 in Hamilton County, Indiana to Omer A. WHISLER.  Lola was the daughter of Carey W. and Clara E. (COOK) LAMBERTSON, and the younger sister of my Charles Wilson LAMBERTSON.  Lola was born June 28, 1883 in Hamilton County, Indiana.  Omer was born February 13, 1869 in Atlanta, Hamilton County, Indiana, the son of Joseph W. and Mary Francis (PAUL) WHISLER.  They had 2 children.  Omer died May 22, 1946.  Lola died November 26, 1964 in Hamilton County, Indiana.  Both are buried in the Arcadia Cemetery, Arcadia, Hamilton County, Indiana.

My paternal 4th-great grandaunt, Esther YOUNG, was born on this date in 1800 in Berkeley County, Virginia.  Esther was the daughter of Charles and Catherine Elizabeth (KINT) YOUNG, and the younger sister of my Phillip YOUNG.  Esther married George MILLER.  I do not have dates of birth or death, nor parentage of George.  Esther died August 18, 1879 in Shelby County, Ohio.  Nothing further is known at this time.

Family Milestones: February 28th

My paternal granduncle, Clarence Harrison LeMASTER, was married on this date in 1911 in Jay County, Indiana to Ferry May BICKEL.  Clarence was the son of Luman Cooper and Barabara Isabel (WEHRLY) LeMASTERS, and the older brother of my Ord Wehrly LeMASTER.  Clarence was born June 14, 1888 in Ord, Valley County, Nebraska. Ferry was born August 27, 1891 in Noble Township, Jay County, Indiana, the daughter of Simon Francis and Mary E. (GILLETT) BICKEL.  They had 5 children.  Ferry died July 20, 1978 in Muncie, Delaware County, Indiana.  Clarence died November 28, 1963 in Union City, Randolph County, Indiana.  Both are buried in the Salamonia Cemetery, Jay County, Indiana.

My paternal 6th-great grandaunt, Anna PHILBRICK, was born on this date in 1720 in Hampton, Province of New Hampshire.  Anna was the daughter of Thomas and Abigail (________) PHILBRICK, and the younger sister of John PHILBRICK.  Anna married Ebenezer SHAW on November 19, 1738.  I do not have dates of birth and death for Ebenezer.  They had 3 children.  Nothing further is known at this time.

My paternal 4th-great granduncle, Charles YOUNG, was born on this date in 1789 in Berkeley County, Virginia.  Charles was the son of Charles and Catherine Elizabeth (KINT) YOUNG, and younger brother of my Phillip YOUNG.  Charles married March 1818 to Nancy SCOTHORN.  Nancy was born August 1, 1798 in Rockingham County, Virginia, the daughter of Lewis SCOTHORN.  They had 9 children in Sandusky County, Ohio.  Nancy died March 28, 1862 in Clear Lake, Steuben County, Indiana.  Charles died December 10, 1841 in Sandusky County, Ohio.

My paternal 4th-great granduncle, John MOULTON, was born on this date in 1789.  John was the son of John and Avis (HURLBUT) MOULTON, and the older brother of my Selah MOULTON.  Nothing further is known at this time.

My maternal 3rd-great granduncle, Nicholas H. SHAW, was born on this date in 1832 in Clarkshill, Fayette County, Indiana.  Nicholas was the son of William and Mary (HECK) SHAW, and the younger brother of my Elizabeth SHAW.  Nicholas married on August 10, 1862 in Iowa to Elizabeth YEAMON.  They had at least 1 child.  Nicholas died January 3, 1917 in Denver, Colorado.

My maternal 5th-great granduncle, Peter J. SWAFFORD, was born on this date in 1805 in South Carolina.  Peter was the son of Jacob and Sarah (LARKIN) SWAFFORD, and the younger brother of my Larkin SWAFFORD.  Peter married Rebecca IGUO; married secondly to Tennessee Annie CORBET.  Peter died February 18, 1886 near Pikeville, Tennessee.

Family Milestones: November 25th

My maternal great aunt and uncle, Harold Wayne LAMBERTSON and Martha Marie PHILLIPS, were married on this date in 1939 in Elwood, Madison County, Indiana.  Harold was the son of Clemon Beals and June Kirk (GILLILAND) LAMBERTSON, and the older brother of my grandmother Bonnie Mae LAMBERTSON.  Harold was born on September 14, 1918 in Elwood, Madison County, Indiana.  Martha was born on February 22, 1920 in Elwood, Madison County, Indiana.


My maternal 5th-great aunt, Frances PUTMAN, married James WATSON on this date in 1851 in Brown County, Indiana.  Frances was the daughter of James and Elizabeth (KENDRICK) PUTMAN, and the younger sister to my Mary PUTMAN.  Frances was born circa 1805.    She had previously been married to Benjamin BOTTS and Alexander CLEVELAND.  Nothing further is known.


My paternal 4th-great granduncle, Adam YOUNG, was born on this date in 1798 in Berkeley County, Virginia.  Adam was the son of Charles and Catherine Elizabeth (KINT) YOUNG, and the younger brother of my Phillip YOUNG.  Adam married Sarah CRUM in 1818 and resided in Shelby County, Ohio.  Sarah was born in 1797, the daughter of Anthony and Elizabeth (________) CRUM.  Adam died March 20, 1871 in Shelby County, Ohio and Sarah died March 1865 in Shelby County, Ohio.


My paternal 6th-great grandfather, Rev. Jesse CHEW, was born on this date in 1738 in Gloucester County, New Jersey.  Jesse was the son of Jeffrey and Amy (DRIVER) CHEW.  Jesse married October 21, 1760 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Mary RICHARDS.  Mary was born December 18, 1738 in New Jersey, the daughter of John and Mary (________) RICHARDS.  Jesse was a Methodist circuit rider, and a loyalist during the Revolutionary War.  Jesse died January 31, 1812 in Gloucester County, New Jersey and Mary died May 7, 1816 in Gloucester County, New Jersey.

Today's featured relative in my database is my paternal 4th great-grandfather, Phillip Young.

Phillip was born October 11, 1787 in Berkeley Co., VA (now WVA), the son of Charles and Catherine Elizabeth (Kint) Young. Phillip married ca. 1806 to Nancy Ann McLane, daughter of Jacob McLane. Nancy was born ca. 1790 Martinsburg, Berkeley Co., VA (now WVA) and died May 1825. Phillip married secondly on July 30, 1826 in Pickaway Co., OH to Keziah Curtis. Keziah was born April 11, 1808 in Pickaway Co., OH and died February 16, 1891 in Shelby Co., OH. Phillip died May 29, 1850 in Shelby Co., OH.

Phillip was a veteran of the War of 1812 and a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
