Obituary : Sarah (Haley) Leonard (1862-1900)

Evangelical Messenger
December 5, 1900, page 779
LEONHARD - Sarah Leonhard, nee Haley, was born, Oct. 26, 1862, and departed this life, Nov. 20, 1900, aged 38 y. and 24 d.  In 1878 she was converted and joined the Ev. Church, her choice, and lived a devoted Christian life until death.  She was married to C. Leonhard, March 24, 1886.  To this union were born 7 children, all living.  She bore her affliction with great patience.  She was a loving mother, a kind companion.  When the end of life drew nigh she glorified God with shouts of victory.  Her last word to husband and children was, "Be prompt in going to church."  Truly she was ready to go and be with Jesus.  The deceased leaves an aged mother, 5 sisters and 6 brothers to mourn her departure; but their loss is her eternal gain.  Funeral services by J.M. Smith.

----
Sarah (Haley) Leonard (1862-1900) was the daughter of Sebastian and Lydia A. (Rader) Haley.  She married Christian Leonhard.  Both are buried in the Mt. Zion Cemetery, Jay County, Indiana.  I have not yet researched this family to identify all 7 of their children.  In the 1900 census, the family was living in Noble Township, Jay County, Indiana with children : Mirlie W., Della A., Grace L., Hazel B., Orval R., Ina F., and William.

Exploratory Data Analysis: Andrew Frank Haley (1864-1937)

Andrew Frank Haley (1864-1937) was my paternal great-granduncle.  What follows is an exploratory analysis of the biographical data I have discovered about him.

1. Vital Records

     1.1. Birth Certificate

Frank was born March 4, 1864 in Ashland County, Ohio. The 1900 census states he was born in March 18641.  The State of Ohio did not require the keeping of birth records until 1867.  State law required the probate court to record these births from 1867 to 1908, according to the Ohio Historical Society webpage.

          1.1.1. Birth Notice in Newspaper

If Frank's birth was recorded in a newspaper, I have not yet discovered it.  There are editions of the Sandusky Register in existence, and that is one avenue of research in the future.

          1.1.2. Bible Record

I am not aware of any surviving Bible record of the Haley family.  Will continue to reach out to extended family in hopes that one does exist.

          1.1.3. Baptismal Record

The Haley's were members of the Evangelical Association.  I am not aware of any baptismal record from Frank at this time.

          1.1.4. Adoption Record

There is no evidence that Frank was adopted.

     1.2. Marriage License

Frank married on November 3, 1887 in Jay County, Indiana to Emma Catherine Leonhard2.  I located a copy of their marriage license at FamilySearch and will make it the subject of a future post.

          1.2.1 Marriage Notice in Newspaper

Will need to search contemporary newspaper accounts to see if mention was made of Frank and Emma's nuptials.

          1.2.2. Anniversary Notice

Frank and Emma's 25th wedding anniversary would have been November 3, 1912.  Will need to search contemporary newspaper accounts to see if mention was made of any anniversary celebrations.

          1.2.3. Divorce Decree

There is no indication that Frank and Emma were ever divorced, but a search of Jay County, Indiana court records needs to be done.

     1.3. Death Certificate

Frank died July 29, 1937 in Oak Park, Cook County, Illinois3.  I do need to obtain a copy of his official death certificate, will add this to my list of "to-do" items. This death record was the subject of a previous post.

Frank's son, Clarence, was a physician in Oak Park, and he may have been living there or visiting at the time of his death.

          1.3.1. Obituary in Newspaper

Will need to check local newspapers in Jay County, Indiana as well as Illinois to see if mention was made of Frank's obituary.  Will add this to my list of "to-do" items for my next research trip.

          1.3.2. Funeral Home Records

Frank's funeral record was the subject of a previous post.  Frank's funeral was conducted by the Baird Funeral home of Portland, Indiana.

          1.3.3. Tombstone Photograph

Frank's tombstone in the Spring Hill Cemetery, Fort Recovery, Mercer County, Ohio4 has been photographed.  His tombstone shows "Frank A. 1864-1937" and "Emma C. 1866-1925" with "Father" and "Mother" below each of their names.

Frank's memorial page at FindAGrave is located here.

2. Census Records

     2.1. Federal Census Records

          2.1.1. 1930 Federal Census

I have not yet been able to locate Frank in the 1930 census.  He spent most of his adult live in Noble Township, Jay County, Indiana.  His wife had just passed in 1925, so it is possible he was living with other relatives.  Will add this to my "to-do" list.

          2.1.2. 1920 Federal Census

On January 3, 1920, Frank was enumerated as the head of household in Noble Township, Jay County, Indiana5, as Frank A. Haley, age 55, married, Farmer.  He was born in Ohio, as were both of his parents.  He owned his own home and it was mortgaged.  He could read and write and spoke English.

          2.1.3. 1910 Federal Census

On April 15, 1910, Frank was enumerated as the head of household in Noble Township, Jay County, Indiana6, as Frank A. Haley, age 46, married, Farmer.  He was born in Ohio, as were both of his parents.  He owned his own home and it was mortgaged.  He had been married for 22 years.  He could read and write and spoke English.

          2.1.4. 1900 Federal Census

On June 20, 1900, Frank was enumerated as head of household in Noble Township, Jay County, Indiana1, as Frank Haley, age 36, married Farmer.  He was born March 1864 in Ohio.  Both of his parents were born in Ohio.  He owned his own home and it was mortgaged.  He had been married for 12 years.  He could read and write and spoke English.

          2.1.5. 1880 Federal Census

On June 22, 1880, Frank was enumerated in the George W. Haley household in Liberty Township, Seneca County, Ohio7, as Andrew F., son, age 16.  He was born in Ohio as were both of his parents.  He had attended school within the year.

          2.1.6. 1870 Federal Census

On June 6, 1870, Frank was enumerated in the George Haley household in Harrisville Township, Medina County, Ohio8, as Andrew F., age 6, born in Ohio.

     2.2. State Census Records

The State of Indiana conducted state census in 1853, 1857, 1871, 1877, 1883, 1889, 1901, 1913, 1919 and 1931.  These, however, were merely for the purposes of legislative apportionment.

     2.3. Agricultural Census Records

I have not yet investigated these types of census records to see what light they might shed on the Haley farm.

3. Military Records

     3.1. Draft Registration

Not applicable, as Frank was too old to sign up for the draft during World War I.

     3.2. Pension Records

Not applicable, as I have found no evidence that Frank ever served in the military.

     3.3. Service Records

          Not applicable.

4. Land Records

     4.1. Deed Records

Deed records need to be thoroughly searched in Jay County, Indiana.  Frank lived most of his adult life in Noble Township.

4.2. Plat map / county map

Jay County published a plat map in 1874, 1881, 1887, 1901, 1910 and 1920 that may be relevant to my search for Frank.  I have access to the 1887 and 1901 plat maps, and need to research what they show.

5. Supplemental Records

Supplemental records available to research for Frank include city/county directories, court records and will and probate records.  Will add these to my list of "to-do" items for my next research trip.

Edna A. Haley was my paternal first cousin twice removed, the daughter of Andrew Frank Haley and Emma Catherine Leonard.  Before locating this record, I didn't have much biographical information, and had the marriage listed as taking place in Jay County, since that was where the license was from.  Without the return, I would not have known that the wedding took place in neighboring Adams County.

The minister who performed the ceremony was Rev. George David Ellsworth Haley, uncle of the bride.  The witnesses to the ceremony were the bride's brother and sister-in-law, Clarence and Julia Haley.

Andrew was my paternal great-granduncle, son of George Washington and Mary Jane (Sherrick) Haley.  The return show's Emma's father as "J.T. Leonhard", but I have it as John Philip Leonhard in my database.

The Haleys were members of the Evangelical Association church, but I'm not aware of any other connections with the minister, George Wolf.

Christmas Greetings

Merry Xmas and Joyous New Year

The Leonhard's

If you can't go to Ind. Xmas, come over here we are cooking for the folks.

This card was part of the collection of cards and postcards saved by paternal great-uncle and aunt, Clarence and Vera (Haley) Stuber.

I'm not sure which Leonhard family sent this, nor the relationship.  The Haley and Leonhard family did intermarry, and both were from Noble Twp., Jay County, Indiana.

Funeral Record : Frank Haley (1937)

Source: Frank Haley Funeral Record, Baird Funeral Home, Jay Co., Indiana,  1937, Saxman & Schindler, comp., n.d.
Another good find for me at the Jay County Historical Society library was the funeral record of Andrew Frank HALEY, brother of my paternal 2nd-great grandfather, Eli Weldon HALEY.  Prior to this find, I knew that Frank, as he was known, had died in 1937, and that he was buried in the Spring Hill Cemetery in Fort Recovery, Ohio.  Now that I had the funeral record, I have a few more tidbits.

According to the record, Frank died July 29, 1937 in Chicago, Illinois.  What was he doing there?  His son, Clarence O. HALEY, was a physician there.  Services for Frank were held at Mt. Zion church in Noble Township, Jay County, Indiana, with burial in Fort Recovery, Ohio.  The funeral record gives his parents as Geo. W. HALEY and Mary Jane SHERICK, as well as he being a widower of Emma LEONARD.

I was unable to locate the death record on Ancestry.com in the Cook County death database.  However, at the FamilySearch.org site, I located his death record.  He didn't die in Chicago, but instead in Oak Park.

Andrew Frank HALEY was born March 4, 1864 in Ashland County, Ohio, the oldest child of George Washington and Mary Jane (SHERRICK) HALEY.  He married November 3, 1887 in Jay County, Indiana to Emma Catherine LEONHARD (1866-1925).

Here is the link to his memorial page at FindAGrave.

Family Milestones : November 3rd

My paternal 2nd-great granduncle, Louis Napoleon METZNER, was born on this date in 1848 in St. Louisville, Licking County, Ohio, the son of John and Catherine (YOUNG) METZNER and a younger brother to my John Adam METZNER. Louis was a farmer who lived most of his life in Jay County, Indiana - in Wayne, Noble and Bearcreek Townships. Louis married Henrietta WEAVER on July 2, 1871 in Jay County, Indiana and he died July 3, 1900 in Bearcreek Township, Jay County, Indiana.

Another paternal 2nd-great granduncle, Henry METZNER, was born on this date in 1842 in Licking County, Ohio. He was the brother of Louis Napoleon METZNER above. Unfortunately, Henry died as an infant. I have his date of death as 1842, but do not have the exact date.

My paternal great-granduncle, Andrew Frank HALEY, married Emma C. LEONHARD on this date in 1887 in Jay County, Indiana. Andrew was the son of George Washington and Mary Jane (SHERRICK) HALEY, and the older brother to my Eli Weldon HALEY. Andrew was a farmer and lived out his life in Noble Township of Jay County, Indiana. One of my research goals is to locate his date of death.

My maternal great-granduncle, John Herman PIERCE, married Charlotte FERGUSON on this date in 1923 in Alexandria, Madison County, Indiana. Herman was the son of William Francis and Clara (PENNISTEN) PIERCE, and the older brother of my Edna Muriel PIERCE. Herman was a farmer of Lafayette Township, Madison County, Indiana and died in 1959.
