Exploratory Data Analysis : Elizabeth (Schafer) Miller (1837-bef1887)

Elizabeth (Schafer) Miller (1837-bef1887) was Corinne's maternal 3rd-great grandmother. What follows is an exploratory analysis of the biographical data I have discovered about her.

1. Vital Records

Elizabeth was born circa 1837 in Germany1, according to the 1860 census, and more specifically, Hesse-Darmstadt2, in the 1870 census.  I have not discovered her parents or any record of her birth in Europe.

     1.1. Birth Certificate

Without her parents names and an exact date, it will be difficult to locate any record of her birth.

          1.1.1. Birth Notice in Newspaper

Without an exact location or date of birth, it will be impossible to locate mention of her birth in a local newspaper.

          1.1.2. Bible Record

I am unaware of any surviving family Bible record for the Schafer family.  Will continue to reach out to extended family in hopes that one will be discovered.

          1.1.3. Baptismal Record

Without an exact location or date of birth, will not be able to locate a baptismal record for Elizabeth.

          1.1.4. Adoption Record

There is no indication that Elizabeth was adopted.

     1.2. Marriage License

Elizabeth married William Miller on January 31, 1856 in Posey County, Indiana.  I do not yet have a copy of their marriage license. Familysearch.org has the marriage index showing Elizabeth's surname as Schaver. Will add this to my list of "to-do" items for my next research trip.

          1.2.1 Marriage Notice in Newspaper

I have not yet searched out available newspapers from the time period to see if William and Elizabeth's marriage mentioned.

          1.2.2. Anniversary Notice

William and Elizabeth's 25th wedding anniversary was January 31, 1881.  Will need to search contemporary newspaper accounts to see if mention was made of any anniversary celebrations.

          1.2.3. Divorce Decree

There is no indication that William and Elizabeth were divorced, but a thorough search of court records in Posey and Vanderburgh Counties, Indiana needs to be completed.  Will add this to my "to-do" list for my next research trip.

     1.3. Death Certificate

I do not have an exact date of death for Elizabeth.  However, husband William remarried May 5, 1887 in Vanderburgh County, Indiana.  Barring an unknown divorce, Elizabeth would have died before May 1887.

          1.3.1. Obituary in Newspaper

Without an exact date of death, I am unable at this time to obtain a copy of her obituary.

          1.3.2. Funeral Home Records

Funeral home records might be available that would help identify when and where Elizabeth died.  Will add this to my list of "to-do" items for my next research trip.

          1.3.3. Tombstone Photograph

Once I obtain her death information, will attempt to obtain a photograph of her tombstone.  A preliminary search at FindAGrave did not locate a memorial page for Elizabeth.  Will add this to my list of "to-do" items for my next research trip.

2. Census Records

     2.1. Federal Census Records

          2.1.1. 1880 Federal Census

On June 1, 1880, Elizabeth was enumerated in the William Miller household in Evansville, Vanderburgh County, Indiana3, as Elizabeth Miller, age 42, keeping house.  She was born in Germany, and both her parents were born in Germany.

     2.3. Agricultural Census Records

I have not yet investigated these types of census records to see what light they might shed on the Miller family.

3. Military Records

     3.1. Draft Registration

Not applicable, as Elizabeth was female.

          2.1.5. 1850 Federal Census

Cummings Family Winston County, Alabama

While at the Genealogy Center in Ft. Wayne, I looked at the Family Maps of Winston County Alabama by Gregory Boyd for the Cummings family.  This book is one that I will need to add to my library, as I feel I will need to go back to it again and again.  Found some of Eileen’s relatives under a number of different spelling variations, including Cummins and Comeens.

Land purchases made in the pre-Civil War era help place these individuals next to each other, indicating close relationships.  For instance, Eileen’s known ancestor Wyatt Cummings, or Wiatt Cummins in the record, was in Section 27 next to Patrick Cummins as well as Riley Cummins.  Other families in the same section include Henson, Miller and Weaver.  Wyatt’s wife was Marguerite Henson.

Wyatt’s father, Spencer, had land in Section 22 and Lindsay Commens had land in Section 23, all in close proximity.  While I’ve seen some of this information before from the BLM GLO Records, it was nice to see them in a map format so that I could locate how closely the families lived to each other.

Now I just need to work out the details and abstract the records for my files.

Inez Irene Ashcraft (1899- ), Jay County, Indiana

Working on filling in some gaps in my database by utilizing the "Indiana Marriages, 1811-1959" database at Familysearch.org to see what updates and corrections I could find.

Inez Irene Ashcraft (1899-    ) was the daughter of William Stevenson and Blanche Bertha (Lewis) Ashcraft.  Her marriage to Beryl Sylvester Miller on March 31, 1918 in Portland, Jay County, Indiana was found in the database.  Prior to this find, I only had the date and no location in my database.

"Indiana, Marriages, 1811-1959," index and images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/V6RB-SH7 : accessed 06 Aug 2013), Beryl Sylvester Miller and Inez Irene Ashcraft, 1918.
Inez was my paternal 5th cousin once removed.  Our common ancestor was Steffan Petry (1729-1793) and his first wife.  I have not yet researched much about Inez and Beryl, though I do have in my database that they were the parents of four children.

New Corydon Sesquicentennial Souvenir 1821-1971

The town of New Corydon in Jay County, Indiana celebrated its sesquicentennial on the weekend of Saturday, July 31 and Sunday, August 1, 1971.  A celebration booklet was published and mention was made of one of my collateral family members.

Galen Miller was mentioned on page 7, as a one-time owner of the store in town.  The store traced its ownership to Theopolis Wilson in 1843.  The store was discontinued in 1948 after 105 years of business.

Galen was born November 18, 1894 in Jay County, Indiana and died  July 6, 1973 in Muncie, Delaware County, Indiana.  He was a grocer for many years in New Corydon, Portland and Muncie.  Galen was married to Mary Annettie  Haley, daughter of Eli Weldon and Cora Belle (Metzner) Haley.

Perry Reynolds (b. ca. 1838), Owen County, Indiana

Working on filling in some gaps in my database by utilizing the "Indiana Marriages, 1811-1959" database at Familysearch.org to see what updates and corrections I could find.

Perry Reynolds (b. ca 1838) was the son of Jesse Reynolds and Mary Putman.  The surname is sometimes found as Runnels.  He married Isabella Miller on December 3, 1863 in Owen County, Indiana. Prior to searching this database, I did not have her maiden name.

"Indiana, Marriages, 1811-1959," index and images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XXFJ-MXQ : accessed 27 Jun 2013), Perry Reynolds and Isabella Miller, 1863.

Perry was my maternal fourth great granduncle.  Our common ancestors are Jesse Reynolds and Mary Putman.  In the 1870 census, the family was living in Bean Blossom Township, Monroe County, Indiana.  Have not researched the family further.

The Anna Groendyke (1866-1938) was my paternal 2nd cousin 3 times removed on the Petry side, she had married Perry Groendyke, my maternal 3rd great granduncle.

The Walter Main Groendyek (1894-1943) was Perry's son and Anna's stepson.  his death certificate tells how he fractured his skull in an accidental fall down some stairs.

The James Wilson Lambertson (1857-1946) was my maternal first cousin 4 times removed.  I didn't know where he was buried, and also the name of son Ora was new to me.  I didn't know James had a half-brother, which indicates that his mother remarried after his father's death, might be why couldn't find her in later census records.
