Exploratory Data Analysis : Elizabeth (Schafer) Miller (1837-bef1887)

Elizabeth (Schafer) Miller (1837-bef1887) was Corinne's maternal 3rd-great grandmother. What follows is an exploratory analysis of the biographical data I have discovered about her.

1. Vital Records

Elizabeth was born circa 1837 in Germany1, according to the 1860 census, and more specifically, Hesse-Darmstadt2, in the 1870 census.  I have not discovered her parents or any record of her birth in Europe.

     1.1. Birth Certificate

Without her parents names and an exact date, it will be difficult to locate any record of her birth.

          1.1.1. Birth Notice in Newspaper

Without an exact location or date of birth, it will be impossible to locate mention of her birth in a local newspaper.

          1.1.2. Bible Record

I am unaware of any surviving family Bible record for the Schafer family.  Will continue to reach out to extended family in hopes that one will be discovered.

          1.1.3. Baptismal Record

Without an exact location or date of birth, will not be able to locate a baptismal record for Elizabeth.

          1.1.4. Adoption Record

There is no indication that Elizabeth was adopted.

     1.2. Marriage License

Elizabeth married William Miller on January 31, 1856 in Posey County, Indiana.  I do not yet have a copy of their marriage license. Familysearch.org has the marriage index showing Elizabeth's surname as Schaver. Will add this to my list of "to-do" items for my next research trip.

          1.2.1 Marriage Notice in Newspaper

I have not yet searched out available newspapers from the time period to see if William and Elizabeth's marriage mentioned.

          1.2.2. Anniversary Notice

William and Elizabeth's 25th wedding anniversary was January 31, 1881.  Will need to search contemporary newspaper accounts to see if mention was made of any anniversary celebrations.

          1.2.3. Divorce Decree

There is no indication that William and Elizabeth were divorced, but a thorough search of court records in Posey and Vanderburgh Counties, Indiana needs to be completed.  Will add this to my "to-do" list for my next research trip.

     1.3. Death Certificate

I do not have an exact date of death for Elizabeth.  However, husband William remarried May 5, 1887 in Vanderburgh County, Indiana.  Barring an unknown divorce, Elizabeth would have died before May 1887.

          1.3.1. Obituary in Newspaper

Without an exact date of death, I am unable at this time to obtain a copy of her obituary.

          1.3.2. Funeral Home Records

Funeral home records might be available that would help identify when and where Elizabeth died.  Will add this to my list of "to-do" items for my next research trip.

          1.3.3. Tombstone Photograph

Once I obtain her death information, will attempt to obtain a photograph of her tombstone.  A preliminary search at FindAGrave did not locate a memorial page for Elizabeth.  Will add this to my list of "to-do" items for my next research trip.

2. Census Records

     2.1. Federal Census Records

          2.1.1. 1880 Federal Census

On June 1, 1880, Elizabeth was enumerated in the William Miller household in Evansville, Vanderburgh County, Indiana3, as Elizabeth Miller, age 42, keeping house.  She was born in Germany, and both her parents were born in Germany.

          2.1.2. 1870 Federal Census

On July 22, 1870, Elizabeth was enumerated in the William Miller household in the 3rd Ward of Evansville, Vanderburgh County, Indiana2, as Elizabeth Miller, age 32, keeping house.  She was born in Hesse-Darmstadt, and both her parents were of foreign birth.

          2.1.3. 1860 Federal Census

On June 18, 1860, Elizabeth was enumerated in the William Miller household in Robinson Township, Posey County, Indiana1, as Elizabeth Miller, age 23, born in Germany.

     2.2. State Census Records

The State of Indiana conducted state census in 1853, 1857, 1871, 1877, 1883, 1889, 1901, 1913, 1919 and 1931.  These, however, were merely for the purposes of legislative apportionment.

     2.3. Agricultural Census Records

I have not yet investigated these types of census records to see what light they might shed on the Miller family.

3. Military Records

     3.1. Draft Registration

Not applicable, as Elizabeth was female.

     3.2. Pension Records

I am not aware of any military service by Elizabeth's father or husband that would have made her eligible to receive pension benefits.

     3.3. Service Records

Not applicable, as Elizabeth was female.

4. Land Records

     4.1. Deed Records

Deed records need to be thoroughly searched in Posey and Vanderburgh Counties, Indiana to see what records might mention Elizabeth.  Will add this to my list of "to-do" items for my next research trip.

4.2. Plat map / county map

Plat maps in Posey and Vanderburgh Counties, Indiana will need to be searched to see what might be relevant to my search for Elizabeth.

5. Supplemental Records

Supplemental records available for research on Elizabeth include city/county directories, court records and will and probate records.  Will add these to my list of "to-do" items for my next research trip.

A search at Familysearch for records of a William Miller born in 1826 with parents Jacob Miller and Elizabeth Speck did turn up one interesting possibility.  A record for Wilhelm Mueller, born to Jacob Mueller and Elisabetha Speck, was born October 20, 1826 in Alsenborn, Pfalz, Bavaria. ("Deutschland, Geburten und Taufen 1558-1898," index, FamilySearch(https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/NP8N-MBL : accessed 12 Jan 2014), Wilhelm Mueller, ; citing ALSENBORN,PFALZ,BAVARIA; FHL microfilm 488864.)

There is no indication that William was adopted.

     1.2. Marriage License

William married January 31, 1856 in Posey County, Indiana to Elizabeth Schafer.  I do not yet have a copy of their marriage license.  Will add this to my list of "to-do" items for my next research trip.

          1.3.3. Tombstone Photograph

I do not yet know what cemetery William is buried in, assuming that he is buried in Evansville, Vanderburgh County, Indiana.  Will add this to my list of "to-do" items for my next research trip.

2. Census Records

     2.1. Federal Census Records

          2.1.1. 1900 Federal Census

On June 1, 1900, William was enumerated as the head of household in German Township, Vanderburgh County, Indiana1, as William Miller, age 73, born October 1826 in Germany.  He had been married for 12 years.  His father and mother were both born in Germany.  He immigrated to the United States in 1848, had been living 52 years in the U.S. and was a naturalized citizen.  His occupation was that of a saloon keeper.  He could read and write and speak English.  He owned his own home, free of mortgage.

          2.1.5. 1850 Federal Census

I have not yet located William in the 1850 census.  He should be there, as he immigrated in 1848, but I do not know yet where he first lived before coming to Indiana.

     2.2. State Census Records

The State of Indiana conducted state census in 1853, 1857, 1871, 1877, 1883, 1889, 1901, 1913, 1919 and 1931.  These, however, were merely for the purposes of legislative apportionment.

Research Updates: August 29, 2011

I was able to spend a few hours yesterday at the Willard Library in Evansville, Indiana and do some research.  This is a great regional library, with a lot of sources that extend outside of their geographic area.  While my main focus was on the the robbery of the New Harmony bank in 1925, I also located information relating to Eileen's and Corinne's lines.

  • Searched additional editions of the Evansville Journal from March 1925, looking for additional information on the robbery in New Harmony that Harry Pierpont's gang was involved with.  Did not find anything other than what the library had already provided.
  • Found information in abstracts of Tagliche Evansville Union 1865-1885 that included information regarding the Sauer, Ritt, Damm, and Schafer lines.  Once I determine how they are related to Corinne's lines, will request copies of the actual newspaper items.  All of which are published in German script!
  • Located record of abstracts of Warrick County, Indiana Will Book I 1831-1859 and Will Book II Feb. 1860-June 1885.  In this work, located Corinne's ancestor Thomas McCool.  Will now be able to request the copy of his will filled April 23, 1869.
  • Located the Divorce Record Index 1818-1941 Vanderburgh County Indiana and located several of Corinne's ancestors and relatives, some of whom had filed multiple times, including the Miller, Chivlare and Sauer families. Now there's a story there!
  • Found published Ledger of Civil War Appointments & Discharges from the Recorders Office of Wabash County, Indiana which had information about Eileen's ancestor, Thomas PEFLEY.  Nice find in a library over 200 miles from home.
  • Made copies from Lagro Township Cemeteries Wabash County Indiana for records of Eileen's Duffey, Lewis, Sills & Pefley ancestors.
For just a few hours of research, it turned out to be a very productive day in a really nice, historic library.  If you ever have an opportunity to research there, I would highly recommend it.

Matthias Miller family - Vanderburgh County, Indiana

Corinne's maternal great-great grandfather, Matthias MILLER and family appear in the 1900-1920 census of Evansville, Vanderburgh County, Indiana in various households and circumstances. Matthias was the son William and Elizabeth (SCHAFER) MILLER.

In the 1900 census, Matthew, as he is listed, was a 38 year old moulder in a stove factory, born October 1861 in Indiana, married for 6 years. Both of his parents were listed as being born in Indiana. He could read and write and spoke English. His wife, Elizabeth, was aged 27, born March 1873 in Indiana, with both parents born in Indiana. She spoke English but could not read or write. She is also listed as the mother of 4 children, with only 1 living. Children living in the household were : Wm. M. aged 7, Carl, aged 5 and Fred, aged 2. Since they were listed as being married for 6 years, Elizabeth should be the mother of at least Carl & Fred, yet the record shows she was the mother of one living child.

In the 1910 census, Matthis, as he is listed, was a 49 year old moulder in a stove foundry, on his second marriage, and married for 16 years. He was born in Indiana, and his father was born in Germany and his mother in Indiana. He was renting his home, and was listed as being out of work for 30 weeks in 1909. His wife, Lizzie, aged 37 years, was on her first marriage, mother of 6 children, with 6 living. She was born in Indiana, as were both of her parents. She could not read or write. Children living in the household were: Willie, aged 16, working in a furniture factory, Carl, aged 14, working in a furniture factory, Fredie, aged 12, Hellen, aged 7 5/12, Eva, aged 5 7/12, and Auther, aged 3 3/12.

In the 1920 census, Matthias was living as a roomer in the household of Oda M. Veach. His aged was listed as 58 years old. He was married, working as a helper in a furniture factory. He was born in Indiana, with both father and mother born in Bavaria.

In the 1920 census, Lizzie was listed as the head of household in a different ward. She was renting her home. She was listed as a 46 year old female with no occupation, born in Indiana, as well as both of her parents. Living with her were children: Eva, aged 15, Arthur, aged 12, Sadie, aged 8, Lorenz, aged 5, and Fred, aged 21 and Fred's wife Bessie, aged 24.

Apparently, Matthias and Lizzie were separated at this time. Other research has located records in the Vanderburgh County were Lilie Miller filed for divorce in 1926 and later in 1931, both cases were dismissed.
