(Not So) Wordless Wednesday - Christmas Tree 2021

It's hard to believe that soon it will be Christmas Day - another year has gone by so fast.

Here's hoping that you and yours have a very Merry Christmas!

(Not So) Wordless Wednesday - Halloween Costumes - 1977 edition

1977 Halloween Costumes
(L-R) Michelle, Travis & Jason LeMaster
Alexandria, Indiana

Came across this slide image of one of our old Halloween costume sets.  These costumes were sewn by my mother.  I actually remember these costumes.  I'm the lion in the middle, my sister was the panda and my brother was the frog.

It was not unusual for mom to make costumes and clothes for us - she is quiet a sewer.

Do you remember school contests for best outfits?  I know there was a time when I won a prize for a homemade outfit.  Nothing as fancy as these outfits, hopefully I can find the picture to share for later.

In 2020, with COVID, I wonder if we will have any trick-or-treaters.

Wordless Wednesday : Brayden & Grandpa

Brayden & Grandpa, Newburgh, Indiana, 21 July 2015
I'm a grandpa again!  My grandson Brayden came into the world last week and I was glad to be able to hold him soon after his entry into the world.

I hope I'll be around a long time to teach him about his heritage.  Perhaps someday he will read this blog and pick up the family history search.

Wordless Wednesday : Map of Salamonia, Indiana (1887)

Source : Atlas of Jay County, Indiana, 1887, Philadelpha, PA, Griffing, Gordon & Co.

This scan from the 1887 Atlas of Jay County, Indiana is of a map of Salamonia, Indiana, which was formerly known as Lancaster.   Since there was another Lancaster in Indiana, the post office there was known as Salamonia, the name which the village retains today.  This copy of the the atlas was at the public library in Portland, and I used my Flip-Pal scanner to scan and stitch the map.

Many members of my paternal family were from Salamonia and the surrounding Madison Township.  In this map, you can see the homestead of W.P. Wehrly due west of town, who was my paternal 2nd-great grandfather William P. Wehrly (1845-1909).  William P. also owned the sawmill in the southeast corner of town.

I do not know exactly when he purchased the sawmill, that would be interesting to find out.  He was listed as a sawmiller in the 1880 census.

Wordless Wednesday : Wright Family circa 1946

Back row (L-R) : Virgil Wright, Edna Muriel (Pierce) Wright, William Wright, Bonnie (Lambertson) Wright, Clara (Wright) High, John M. High.  Front row : Barbara Wright, Terry Wright.

This undated family photo was taken at the Virgil Wright farm in Monroe Township, Madison County, Indiana, just north of Alexandria.  Estimated date is 1945-46, based on the age of Terry Wright.

This farmhouse was where I grew up and I recognize the driveway and the tree on the right side.  The fencing is gone, the tree across the road are gone as well.
