Exploratory Data Analysis: Mary Jane (Sherrick) Haley Kimble (1844-1916)

Mary Jane (Sherrick) Haley Kimble (1844-1916) was my paternal 2nd-great grandmother.  What follows is an exploratory analysis of the biographical data I have discovered about her.


1. Vital Records


     1.1. Birth certificate


          Mary was born January 13, 1844 in Ashland County, Ohio¹.  There were no birth certificates required at this time, as the State of Ohio did not begin requiring them until 1867.


          1.1.1. Birth notice in newspaper


               I have not been able to locate any contemporary news reports of Mary's birth.


          1.1.2. Bible Record


               I am not aware of the survival of a Sherrick family Bible.  I will continue to reach out to extended family in hopes that one does exist.


          1.1.3. Baptismal Record


               I have not located a baptismal record for Mary.  I believe that the Sherrick family were Mennonite/Anabapist, so there would not be an infant baptism record.


          1.1.4. Adoption Record


               There is no indication that Mary was adopted.


     1.2. Marriage license


          Mary married George Washington Haley on October 14, 1862 in Ashland County, Ohio¹.


          Mary married Robert N. Kimble on May 8, 1897 in Jay County, Indiana².  A copy of their marriage license was the subject of an earlier post.


          1.2.1. Marriage notice in newspaper


               I have not searched contemporary newspapers in Ashland County, Ohio to see if the nuptials of George and Mary were mentioned.  Likewise, I have not searched Jay County, Indiana newspapers for mention of Robert and Mary's marriage.  Have added this to my "to do" list on my next research trip.


          1.2.2. Anniversary notice


               I need to search newspapers in Jay County, Indiana for mention of George and Mary's anniversaries.  Their 25th would have been October 14, 1887.


          1.2.3. Divorce decree


               There is no indication that a divorce ever occurred, and a recent search of court records during the time period did not turn up a divorce record.


     1.3. Death certificate


          Mary died January 15, 1916 in Jay County, Indiana³.  I need to obtain a copy of her death certificate from the Jay County Health Department.


          1.3.1. Obituary in newspaper


               Mary's obituary appeared in the January 15, 1916 edition of the Portland Commercial-Review.³.  Her married name was mispelled as "Kimball" in the obituary, rather than Kimble.  Mary's obituary was the subject of a previous post.


          1.3.2. Funeral home records


               The Jay County library has some funeral home records from the various funeral homes in the area.  Will add this to my "to do" list for my next research trip to the area.


          1.3.3. Tombstone photograph


               Mary's tombstone in the Mt. Zion cemetery has been photographed.  I need to make it the subject of a "Tombstone Tuesday" post.


2. Census Records


     2.1. Federal Census Records


          2.1.1. 1910 Federal Census


               I have yet to find Mary in the 1910 census.  She should probably be in Noble Township, Jay County, Indiana.  She should be living in Noble Township, Jay County, Indiana, but I've not found her in any index.  Will have to do a line by line search in Noble Township.


          2.1.2. 1900 Federal Census


               On June 16, 1900, Mary was enumerated in the Robert Kimble household in Noble Township, Jay County, Indiana⁴, as Mary J. Kimble, wife, age 56, born January 1844 in Ohio.  She had been married for 3 years.  She was the mother of 7 children, 6 of whom were living.  Both of her parents were born in Pennsylvania.  She could read and write and spoke English.  Living in the household were husband Robert, age 58, born in Ohio, step-son John, age 20, born in Indiana, and Mary's daughter Ora, age 15, born in Indiana.


          2.1.3. 1880 Federal Census


               On June 22, 1880, Mary was enumerated in the George W. Haley household in Liberty Township, Seneca County, Ohio⁵, as Mary J. Haley, wife, age 36, born in Ohio.  Her occupation was listed as keeping house.  Both her parents were born in Pennsylvania.  Living in the household were husband George, age 40; son Andrew F., age 16; son Eli W., age 14; son  David E., age 11; daughter Rachel A.P., age 10; son Charles W., age 7; and daughter Carrie M., age 3.


          2.1.4. 1870 Federal Census


               On June 6, 1870, Mary was enumerated in the George Haley household in Harrisville Township, Medina County, Ohio⁶, as Mary Haley, age 26, born in Ohio.  Her occupation was listed as keeping house.  Living in the household were husband George, age 30; son Andrew F., age 6; son Eli W., age 4; son David age 1; and Emma P., aged 6 months.


          2.1.5. 1860 Federal Census


               On August 2, 1860, Mary was enumerated in the David Sharack household in Vermillion Township, Ashland County, Ohio⁷ as Mary J. Sharack, age 17, born in Ohio.  She had attended school within the year.


          2.1.4. 1850 Federal Census


               On September 19, 1850, Mary was enumerated in the David Scherick household in Vermillion Township, Ashland County, Ohio⁸ as Mary Jane Scherick, age 7, born in Ohio. She had attended school within the year.


     2.2. State Census Records


          Many states took their own enumerations, unfortunately, Ohio state census records are not known to exist.
          The State of Indiana conducted state census in 1853, 1857, 1871, 1877, 1883, 1889, 1901, 1913, 1919, and 1931.  These however, were merely for the purposes of legislative apportionment.


     2.3. Agriculture Census Records


          I have not yet investigated these types of census records to see what information they might shed on the Haley farm.


3. Military Records


     3.1. Draft registration


          Not applicable, as Mary was female.


     3.2. Pension records


          I am not aware of any military service by either of Mary's husbands.


     3.3. Service records


          Not applicable, as Mary was female.


4. Land Records


     4.1. Deed records


          Deed records need to be thoroughly searched in a number of counties, including Jay County in Indiana as well as Ashland, Medina, Seneca and Marion counties in Ohio.


     4.2. Plat map / county map


          Jay County published a plat map in 1874, 1881, 1887 and 1901, 1910 and 1920 that may be relevant to my search for the Haley homestead.


          Will also need to add searching for maps of the various Ohio counties where Mary lived to my "to do" list for my next research trip.


5. Supplemental Records.


     Supplemental records available to research for Mary include city/county directories, court records and will and probate records.  Searching these items will be on my next "to do" list on my research trip to Jay County and/or the Allen County Library in Ft. Wayne.

1829 - Christian Friedrich Wilhelm BOLLING died. Christian was the son of Friedrich Wilhelm BOLLING and Anna Marie Louise KAHRE.


1849 - Amanda Cassandra MAXON married James C. PATTERSON in Sharpsburg, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania.  Amanda was the daughter of Jesse MAXON and Jane NANGLE.


1861 - Zona MAXSON born.  Zona was the daughter of William MAXSON and Hannah KESLER.


1877 - Matthew HIXENBAUGH born in Washington County, Pennsylvania.  Matthew  was the son of Church HIXENBAUGH and Sarah A. MAXON.


1884 - Gincy Arminda BRUMLEY born in Hardin County, Tennessee.  Gincy was the daughter of Riley Young BRUMLEY and Nancy A. CUMMINGS.


1900 - Ida DAVIS married Carvie A. MORRIS in Monroe County, Indiana.  Ida was the daughter of James Austin DAVIS and Mary Ellen SWAFFORD.  Ida was my 2x-great grandmother.


1902 - Lowell Leslie PEFLEY born in Wabash County, Indiana.  Lowell was the son of Albert Duffey PEFLEY and Sarah May PEEPLES.


1902 - Edna R. WHISLER born.  Edna was the daughter of Omer A. WHISLER and Lola May LAMBERTSON.


1908 - George Gerald ORCUTT born.  George was the son of George Albert ORCUTT and Della P. JAMES.


1912 - Galen Delbert LEWIS born in Dora, Wabash County, Indiana.  Galen was the son of Lawrence Solomon LEWIS and Ruth Alice SILLS.


1959 - John Herman PIERCE died in Alexandria, Madison County, Indiana.  John was the son of William Francis PIERCE and Clara PENISTEN.


1959 - William Byrd SWAFFORD died in Bledsoe County, Tennessee.  William was the son of Aaron SWAFFORD and Nancy Alice PATTON.


1965 - Evert Raymond COX died in Amarillo, Texas.  Evert was the son of Henry Luther COX and Martha Angie LEE.


1970 - Hoy Hubert KING died.  Hoy was the son of David KING and Litha Ann Trumilis D'Amsel MAY.

1693 - Johannes BRAÜN died in Würrtemberg.  Johannes was the son of Michael BRAÜN.  Johannes was my 9x-great grandfather.


1716 - Thomas SEWALL died.  Thomas was the son of John SEWALL and Hannah FESSENDEN.


1717 - Jacob BEALS born in Chester County, Pennsylvania.  Jacob was the son of Jacob BEALS and Mary BROOKSBY.


1744 - Vincentius ANTONIDES died.  Vincentius was my 8x-great grandfather.


1762 - Naaman BURDICK born.  Naaman was the son of Nathan BURDICK and Goodeth MAXSON.


1767 - Tacy MAXSON married Oliver BABCOCK.  Tacy was the daughter of Samuel MAXSON and Ruth ROGERS.


1771 - Johan Michael JACOBS married Maria Catherine CHERDRON in Dover Township, York County, Pennsylvania.  Maria was the daughter of Hans Heinrich CHERDRON and Anna Maria HERBACH.  They were my 6x-great grandparents.


1792 - John NOSLER married Mary WYLE in Montgomery County, Virginia.  John was the son of Bostin NOSLER and Sophia ________.


1795 - John NOSLER married Martha SNAVELL in Montgomery County, Virginia. John was the son of Bostin NOSLER and Sophia ________.


1804 - Rachel HAINES married Japeth BISHOP in Burlington County, New Jersey.  Rachel was the daughter of Robert HAINES and Rachel VENICOMB.


1815 - Nathan MAXSON married Susanna DICKS in Harrison County, Ohio.  Nathan was the son of Jonathan MAXSON and Mary MAGDILINE.


1821 - Nancy BYARS married Robert POWER in Bracken County, Kentucky.  Nancy was the daughter of John BYARS and Catherine HECK.


1827 - Amelia FISHER born.  Amelia was the daughter of Daniel FISHER and Susanna REEVES.


1828 - Montgomery GROENENDYKE born in Indiana.  Montgomery was the son of James GROENENDYKE and Barbara BUCK.


1833 - Hetta RINEHART born in Henry County, Indiana.  Hetta was the daughter of Jacob RINEHART and Mary ADNEY.


1842 - Lucinda MAXSON died in Indiana.  Lucinda was the daughter of Jonathan MAXSON and Christiana DAVIS.


1851 - Henry C. ALDERMAN married Susan M. BAITS in Bond County, Illinois.  Henry was the son of Henry ALDERMAN and Hannah J. GILBERT.


1860 - Mary Elvin MAXSON born in Kansas.  Mary was the daughter of Jonathan MAXSON and Alice SMITH.


1862 - Mary Jane CROCKETT married George William GUY.  Mary was the daughter of Jackson Conrad CROCKETT and Clarinda GRIFFITHS.


1864 - Mary Jane CROCKETT married John Thomas RICHARDS in Schuyler County, Illinois.  Mary was the daughter of Jackson Conrad CROCKETT and Clarinda GRIFFITHS.


1866 - Sarah Jane BARKER married Amos S. HINSHAW.  Sarah was the daughter of John BARKER and Amy COX.


1868 - Caroline Alvina DEUTSCH married Charles J. SCWEITZER in Evansville, Vanderburgh County, Indiana.  Caroline was the daughter of Johann Jacob DEUTSCH and Doris Elisabeth SCHUTTE.


1875 - Thomas BEALS died in Hamilton County, Indiana.  Thomas was the son of John BEALS and Mary CARTER.


1890 - Albert ALDERMAN born.  Albert was the son of George W. ALDERMAN and Sarah JARRARD.


1904 - Solomon PETRY died in Jay County, Indiana.  Solomon was the son of Jacob PETRY and Magdalena MILLER.


1909 - Mary BEALS died in Cicero, Hamilton County, Indiana.  Mary was the daughter of John W. DAVIS and Mary BARKER.  Mary was my 4x-great grandmother.

1773 - Bennajah HIATT born in Guilford County, North Carolina.  Bennajah was the son of William HIATT and Charity WILLIAMS.


1809 - Judiah HIGGINS married Mary QUICK in Readington, Hunterdon County, New Jersey.  Judiah was the son of Judiah H. HIGGINS and Mary HILL.


1860 - John F. MILLS born.  John was the son of Aaron MILLS and Catherine FARMER.


1898 - John W. RITT died.  John was the son of Karl Ludwig RITT and Christine SCHMIDT.


1900 - Clave L. TOLLETT born.  Clave was the son of Major C. TOLLETT and Amanda SWAFFORD.


1903 - William BALES died.  William was the son of Aaron BALES and Alice MANIFOLD.


1905 - Dora Ella SWAFFORD married Jesse GOODMAN in Ray County, Missouri. Dora was the daughter of Samuel Richard SWAFFORD and Susan Isabell McGAUGH.


1911 - Edgar E. MORRISTON married Picollia OWENS.  Edgar was the son of Alonzo T. MORRISTON and Rebecca A. WAMSLEY.


1912 - Nancy Ann WARDLOW died in Washington Township, Brown County, Ohio.  Nancy was the daughter of John WRIGHT and Anna WARDLOW.


1912 - Mary DAVIS born.  Mary was the daughter of Laud Alfred DAVIS and Eva STUTLER.


1954 - James A. LEWIS died.  James was the son of William Henry LEWIS and Malissa Adeline MORRISTON.

1830 - Richard TAYLOR died.  Richard was the son of Richard TAYLOR and Catherine DAVIS.

1838 - Rachel LEMASTERS born in Shelby County, Ohio.  Rachel was the daughter of Luman Walker LEMASTERS and Nancy YOUNG.

1841 - Nathaniel CHEW died in Gloucester County, New Jersey.  Nathaniel was the son of Jesse CHEW and Mary RICHARDS.  Nathaniel was my 5x-great grandfather.

1860 - Abraham Lincoln BRUNER born.  Abraham was the son of Andrew Jackson BRUNER and Selina HAWORTH.

1864 - Elizabeth Angeline KING born in Madison County, Indiana.  Elizabeth was the daughter of John Wesley KING and Mary Catherine HENDRICKS.

1865 - John SLADE married Joanna McCLAIN in Clermont County, Ohio.  John was the son of Ezekial SLADE and Mary HODGKINS.

1893 - Nancy Elizabeth TOLLETT died in Pikeville, Tennessee.  Nancy was the daughter of William M. LEE and Elizabeth BROWN.

1896 - Eula Lee MATTHEWS born.  Eula was the daughter of Fitzhugh Lee MATTHEWS and Mary Elizabeth SWAFFORD.

1909 - Reed Thompson STROSNIDER born in Blacksville, Monongalia County, West Virginia.  Reed was the son of Earl Thompson STROSNIDER and Ethel Gertrude CHALFANT.

1910 - Nellie Myrtle BEALS married Albert Edward STOBER in Hamilton County, Indiana.  Nellie was the daughter of Nathan Thomas BEALS and Elizabeth Caroline POE.

1925 - Charles Alexander West CHEW died in Boyne City, Charlevoix County, Michigan.  Charles was the son of Ezekiel Cooper CHEW and Caroline Bishop WOOLSTON.

1940 - Beulah Sarah ROCKWELL died in Ft. Recovery, Mercer County, Ohio.  Beulah was the daughter of Luman Walker LeMASTERS and Mary Keziah CHEW.

1672 - Anne Margueritte VIELLARD born in Otterberg, Bayern.  Anne was the daughter of Pierre VIELLARD and Catherine BOYE.  Anne was my 8x-great grandmother.


1855 - Benjamin Franklin BOTTS married Melissa CHILDERS in Monroe County, Indiana.  Benjamin was the son of Benjamin BOTTS and Frances PUTMAN.


1865 - Eliza Annette MAXON died.  Eliza was the daughter of Alexander Young MAXON and Margaret ROSE.


1868 - Willard S. MAXSON born in Iowa.  Willard was the son of Thaddeus Warsaw MAXSON and Lydia H. YATES.


1872 - William Eli COFFELT born in Cole County, Missouri.  William was the son of Daniel COFFELT and Rebecca A. SWAFFORD.


1878 - Maud LAMBERTSON born in Madison Township, Butler County, Ohio.  Maud was the daughter of Carey W. LAMBERTSON and Clara E. COOK.


1890 - Joseph Glass McPHEETERS died in Monroe County, Indiana.  Joseph was the son of Joseph Glass McPHEETERS and Clara M. DUNN.


1883 - Matilda Gregg MAXON married Solomon Elija CHALFANT.  Matilda was the daughter of Alexander Young MAXON and Margaret ROSE.


1894 - Evert Raymond COX born in Rayville, Missouri.  Evert was the son of Henry Luther COX and Martha Angie LEE.


1894 - Anna Margaret MAXON born in Greene County, Pennsylvania.  Anna was the daughter of Thomas Alexander MAXON and Lenora Belle BROWN.


1897 - Ben F. BRADLEY born.  Ben was the son of Isaac M. BRADLEY and Manerva Lavonia SWAFFORD.


1908 - John William LEE married Addie Mae RIMMER.  John was the son of William Burrell LEE and Margaret Jane SWAFFORD.


1912 - Merrill Russell HERCULES born in Burketsville, Ohio.  Merrill was the son of Russell J. HERCULES and Bertha Alberta LeMASTER.

Surname Saturday : Finel

The FINEL surname is in my paternal line.  The origins of the surname are unknown at this point.


Stories and history:


Ahnentafel # 91 : Lydia Finel (1796-1869).  Lydia was born February 21, 1796 in Rutland County, Vermont.  She married circa 1815 in Rutland County, Vermont to Selah Moulton (1790-1848).  Selah was born October 28, 1790 in Rutland County, Vermont.  They raised 9 children in Rutland County, Vermont and Licking County, Ohio.  He died February 1848 in St. Albans, Licking County, Ohio.  Lydia died December 3, 1869 in Licking County, Ohio.  They are both buried in the Maple Grove Cemetery, Licking County, Ohio.


Ahnentafel # 182: Edward Finel (1748-1821).  Edward was born October 27, 1748 in Granville, Massachusetts.  He married in Saratoga, New York to Anna Morgan (1760-1833).  Anna was born October 22, 1760 in Sargent, New York. They raised 10 children in Rutland County, Vermont.  She died December 3, 1833 in Poultney, Rutland County, Vermont.  Edward died June 19, 1821 in East Poultney, Rutland County, Vermont.


Ahnentafel # 364: Edward Finel (    -bet1747/8).  Edward died between 1747 and 1748 in Granville, Massachusetts.  He married Sarah Green (1730/31-1811).  Sarah was born January 30, 1730/31 in Shrewsbury, Worcester County, Massachusetts.  She died February 8, 1811 in Granville, Massachusetts.

1892 - Mary Elizabeth SWAFFORD married Fitzhugh Lee MATTHEWS in Cumberland County, Tennessee.  Mary was the daughter of John Daniel SWAFFORD and Mary Elizabeth KEARLEY.


1906 - Hazel LEWIS born.  Hazel was the daughter of Miles Clement LEWIS and Naomi C. BRANNAN.


1907 - Oma May DAVIS born.  Oma was the daughter of Winchester Journey DAVIS and Lula Iona DAVIS.


1957 - Eli Weldon HALEY died in Madison Township, Jay County, Indiana.  Eli was the son of George Washington HALEY and Mary Jane SHERRICK.  Eli was my great-grandfather.


1981 - Oren C. LEE died in Richmond, Missouri.  Oren was the son of Jesse Clarence LEE and Hattie Deana SMART.

1708 - Josiah PIERCE born in Woburn, Middlesex County, Massachusetts.  Josiah was the son of Samuel PIERCE and Abigail JOHNSON.


1732 - Samuel WILLSON married Deborah WILLETS in Bethlehem, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Samuel was the son of Samuel WILLSON and Hester OVERTON.  Deborah was the daughter of Joseph WILLETS and Deborah SEAMAN.  They were my 8x-great grandparents.
